My husband has his last post treatment appt in 4/11. He had a good report and dr wants to see him back for follow up on July. His bloodwork from April showed he’s still anemic and thyroid was off some but dr said all this is normal following treatment, which ended jan10th.
today he came home from work not feeling well. Told me I was worrying for nothing. Symptoms Are nausea, fatigue. He didn’t eat much today because of nausea. He said it doesn’t feel like he’s getting flu. Just feels different. Just tummy ache/ nausea
should I call his hematologist or wait it out to see how he feels in a day or two Everytime he gets I’ll I worry and as most of you know, i am overboard with this nonsense
Hi Liz
I have my thyroid checked annually at gp my trust hospital it first first 5 years. Like you say post code lottery. My oncologist did write to gp for them to continue.

So do you have hypothyroidism?
No

I have it. Developed around the 1 year mark. Was feeling tired and felt the radiation fatigue was not the sole cause of it. Other symptoms include feeling cold and gaining weight. Google the symptoms on the NHS Web site. A simple blood test give the diagnosis.
At the moment I/GP am trying to balance the thyroxine. Blood tests every 6 weeks until the dose gives the right levels. It will probably get worse over time, but the thyroxine does work to keep everything on an even keel. Underactive thyroid is quite common, not just in H&N cancer patients.
Thanks for your response. Is it common though, to have that blood test for thyroid lower than normal going thru the treatment for head and neck cancer? Is it the tsh-v with reflex test that tells if you have hypothyroidism? I just looked at his bloodwork from April and his was normal.

I don't think we are generally tested for thyroid levels during and immediately after treatment in the UK. Hypothyroidism is usually discovered through patient informed follow up after treatment just like Peter's.
