Earache/ Head Pressure

Hi everyone,

I had a neck dissection following tongue cancer removal about 12 weeks ago with no particular issues, but for the past 3 weeks have developed an intense earache/pressure in head that is causing considerable pain.

I have tried massage, heat, cold, and increased OTC medication, but I cant shift it.

ENT cannot find any issues. There is no infection. Consultant suggested lymph drainage massage but its not helping.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, what did you do to relieve it/ how long did it last?

of note, after the pain started I had to go back in for my tongue to be shaved down and was given a local anesthetic. I had no earache while that anesthetic was active, so cant work out if this pain is due to something in the tongue, or something in head around wound site.

Ive not slept in over a week and would be grateful for your help.

Thanks everyone

  • Trouble with sleeping will not be helping, maybe a course of sleeping tablets? Ask your GP if it would be suitable?

Many patients, including myself suffer with Tinnitus which can seem a bit like head pressure, maybe bring this to your GP's attention also?

  • Hi Daniel I had a selective neck dissecting in Oct 23 and experienced pressure in my neck and head plus pressure in my ear and what feels like fluid ever since.it feels like there needs to be a valve to release the pressure. I also have blurred vision as a result.

I've tried massage, pain killers, nerve tablets, naproxen but absolutely nothing helps. In fact I think for me, massage makes it worse. There must be something that can  be done about it but neither my hospital nor GP are interested.

I really hope someone can help.

  • Good evening Daniel M, i have not suffered in this way after any of my surgeries or treatment, so I cannot be of much help. i would personally go back to your consultant again, failing that, please contact your G.P as they should be able to point you in the right direction. Wishing you all the best,
