We finally got the news we were waiting for yesterday afternoon. The base of the tongue cancer has spread to lymph nodes at both sides of the throat but no further spread. Relief is immense and the consultant explained in detail how this will be treated with both radiotherapy and chemo. He fully expects a cure which is the most amazing news we could wish for. The road ahead is obviously going to be gruelling, 30 radiotherapy applications and 6 sessions of chemo. A food line will also be used. We are prepared. Huge thank you to everyone on here for your helpful tips and details of your own experiences in this situation. Onwards and upwards.
Morning Ray, thank you so much for your message, it's comforting to read your guys stories, its not that he isn't trying,it's just that his nutritionist, not that I am saying she's pushy, suggesting that he should be eating orally more by now,10wks post treatment,,as the longer he's leaving it, the harder it will get to eat solids,I just wonder that maybe she is right? Just can't watch him losing more weight,he's looking so thin and fragile compare to when he started treatment. Mel
Hi Mel, my nutritionist was very pushy too, they do realize however that we all recover differently and try to encourage us where they can. Try not to stress about it, as long as he is getting nourishment from his PEG, just try him on very small amounts of different things to start with.
Ray.
Hi Mel - we are in same boat - my husband rang bell on 3 Jan having completed 30 rounds of radio and 6 sessions of chemo etc - he's got a RIGG fitted and to say the recovery is brutal is indeed correct. Every week brings a new challenge it feels. My husband is now hardly eating from being continually nauseous and we have just been yesterday for our first post treatment appt back to the ENT Head and Neck team and fhey were fantastic with us. Paul now has two different anti sickness drugs to take, which we are hoping works so that he can get back to being able to tolerate feeds and trying to eat more orally aka soups and things as he has no saliva. He got given a hearing test as his right ear is completely deaf since radio and that's his good hearing ear which has caused him much anxiety and frustration not being able to hear properly. So he's now got things to take for that as the test showed it shouldn't be a permanent issue which was amazing!
it's really hard for us looking in and all we can do is as others have said take one day, one week as it comes right now. It feels like forever but it's still really early.
Lots of hugs from a fellow wife xx
Paul is exactly the same - his ulcers have now basically cleared up, but because he had such awful constipation and it took a lot of help to get that cleared up it's caused him some psychological issues so he's not taking as much pain relief, has caused issues with doing feeds down the tube etc and he now has awful nausea which has stopped him from eating anything whatsoever for over two weeks - as you have said they are losing weight right before our eyes and it's heartbreaking.
The dietitians are great but their job is to try to get them to eat whatever they can and right now it's literally anything! Doesn't matter how little, or how often - anything is a huge positive.
Hello fellow wife, thank you soo much for your encouraging message, one thing I haven't mentioned, but you reminded me, my husbands hearing on his right ear is very bad,the left one is a little better, better bring this up on our next appointment. Keep in touch. All my best wishes for now. Mel.
Good evening Mrsmm, i had a pushy dietician so please do not worry to much what they say as we all recover at different rates , his appetite will return once he and his body is ready. I know most people would switch to solid food rather than the "not very appetising food supplements" so its just a matter of time when everything will come together. Take care.

Hello Chris, Thank you for your message, if it wouldn't be for the sore throat and the pain swallowing even when sipping water, it would be half the battle,as I mentioned, just getting the supplements via his PEG doesn't seem enough to mentain the weight. I guess patience is the key here. All the best. Mel x
