What to expect…?

Hi everyone Wave

Wondering if anyone can guide me through what to expect after being referred under urgent referral? I have a lesion on the top of my tongue which has been there for around 3/4 years, dentist has sent through 2 previous referrals but I’ve not had anything through from any hospital. Base of tongue is now swollen on the same side as lesion along with aching pain running through base of tongue and jaw line which comes and goes. Attended doctors Friday and he could feel the swelling along with inflamed lymph nodes so has progressed an urgent referral to ENT.

What should I expect at the first appointment? Will there be any tests there and then or will it just be a basic overview appointment?

Pretty nervous but trying to keep perspective…it’s a long wait and know I’ll just worry about what to expect at the appointment so any help would be appreciated!

  • Good evening XK, my experience was quite a shock to me even though i knew in the back of my mind it was cancer, when i was called in to see the Maxillofacial / ENT consultant he knew just by looking telling me he was 99% certain it was cancer of the floor of the mouth, he started the ball rolling there and then sending me for x-rays and a biopsy along with making an appointment for an MRI scan. However, a lot depends on how serious and aggressive the tumour is, in most cases, they will look and feel around the neck and inside the mouth and may be using a camera down your throat as well they will then make appointments for blood tests, scans, and x-rays. Fingers crossed for your appointment when it comes, hopefully within two weeks, Take care.

  • Hi Chris, thanks for your view! Appreciate they can never say 100% without further testing but at least I’ll know they may have a good idea from first appointment, I wasn’t sure if that was ever something that happened or if it was a definite to be sent for further tests etc.

Agree with Chris. Consultants usually know what they are looking at.Some will come straight out with it and some you have to ask

That’s excellent. The sooner you know the better. I had to wait over a month for my appointment.
Waiting is hugely stressful but all you can do is keep busy with stuff you like doing.

  • Hi XK

I had my 2-week urgent referral with the ENT consultant by phone - that really threw me as I thought it would be face to face. when I saw him a week later I’d already had an US on my neck lump. I asked him directly if he was concerned and he said yes. I had a needle biopsy and nasal scope. Over the next two weeks an MRI, CT and PET scan and another biopsy. At the next meeting I got the diagnosis and was in surgery 10 days later.

it sounds like everyone’s experience is a little bit different. Hope everything goes well for you.

  • It really is good, I can’t fault them so far, just bad timing to get to the docs on the Friday and have all weekend with not hearing but mid afternoon Monday is a great turnaround in fairness.

  • I’m lucky to work and have a busy home life so hopefully it will come around quickly!
