Dentist prior to radiotherapy

So, I’m posting this in hope of getting information.I’m waiting on radiotherapy for salivary gland cancer but need my dental clearance first. Wasn’t too worried by this to start but after reading on-line I’m starting to panic. My teeth while I have quite a few fillings are okay and been that way for years, regular check ups and generally fine. But I’ve read that teeth are removed if they have large fillings, I do indeed have quite a few large fillings. So what I’m hoping to get insight on is, are all teeth with fillings removed, this will be worse to me then when I lost my heir with Chemo. My radiotherapy will be on one side of my neck which leads to my next question, will all my teeth be affected, both sides top and bottom. Think I could cope if it’s just the lower side teeth removed on one side. But oh my, if it’s all my filled teeth, nope nope nope.  Also what happens after do you get help with false teeth, or do you spend the rest of your life toothless. I know you can’t have implants because the bone won’t be good enough. What are the options, I think I will struggle with this more then the radiotherapy.

    Hi Moi

I was apprehensive about the dental side of things prior to starting Chemoradio for Tonsil cancer.... thought I was going to lose quite a few as I had fillings....three molars extracted... not as bad as I expected.

Ask your CNS about post dental aftercare....

And try to stay away from Dr Google

  • I have many fillings, even on the treatment side, and kept all of my teeth. I had to see the dentist on an emergency appointment after treatment as one of my fillings fell out, but they just filled it again and away I went.Thumbsup

My teeth are all heavily restored due to frequent quaffing of Franol syrup for childhood asthma. The roots are sound and I kept them all

do you get help with false teeth,

Yes but it can take years. I have a contact who waited four years for his BUT he has had implants.

I know you can’t have implants

It depends on the dose each jaw gets. My cancer was at the base of my tongue but I did get radiotherapy to both side...reduced on one side. That side is OK for implants having received less than 25Gy

  • Thanks, good to hear how it really was from someone who has gone through it.

  • That’s good to hear, know I’m probably panicking, but your mind sure does race with all possible outcomes.

  • Thanks, that info has really helped me, possible implants makes me feel better. Also quite confident my roots are good, so just maybe it won’t be as bad as I’m worrying about

I have several heavily filled teet( but I didn’t need any extractions. I know some trust do take reet( out the. Later they heard starting to do implants but nit in the radiated side. I was also more upset about teeth possibly being taken out but I was fine

    good luck

  • Hello there, not sure if this helps, my husband had a dental appointment prior start of RT/CT, and he got advised to have one cracked tooth taken out, also it never caused any trouble,  but it could have potentially cause an infection, so we had that tooth taken out, in regards to teeth taken out that have large fillings, I have not heard of that one, as long teeth don't cause potential infection, they should be safe.

  • I too had a few big amalgam fillings. Got away with no extractions.

  • I have a number of fillings, some of them large they were not removed in my case.

    Hope that reassures you!
