Sickness After Chemo

Hello All

My husband starts his treatment for throat cancer on Monday. He has a full day of chemo followed by radiotherapy, with radiotherapy for 5 days a week for the next 6 weeks, and another full day of chemo in week 3.

The trip to the hospital is 2 hours each way, and I just wanted to ask what the likelihood of sickness during the car journeys will be, just so I can be prepared.

Grateful for any advice

Sam

  • Hi Sam, it varies person to person, but I would take a few sick bags just in case.. better safe than sorry, eh?

  • Hi Beau. That was what I was planning, so thanks for the reassurance!

  • Hi Sam

My wife brought a bucket just in case I was sick in her car.  Biggest waste of money!  I did take the anti sickness tablets whilst having chemo but did not need any additional ones following the chemo day.  As we all say - everyone is different.

  • Hi Sam. I’m not sure Cisplatin makes you sick straightaway. I didn’t have any though but lots of people here ask whether they should take their antisickness tablets straightaway or wait til they feel sick.
What did make me feel nauseous was the morphine.
Husband  drove me every day and we too had two hours each way on bad days but always an hour and a half.

    Hi Sam

I had chemoradio in 2023 for tonsil cancer...1 hour each way to sessions...always had a few sick bags in the car....luckily never needed them....but had a few close calls.

  • Hi Sam, so sorry to hear that your husband has got to go through all this, sounds like that he is in the same situation then my hubby, my husband had the same treatment plan like your other half by the sound if it, do you know what chemo he will be on? Possible Cisplatin? My husband had 2 rounds of this, with this chemo he was on a drip for kidneys aswell, as we got told that this chemo could cause damage to the kidneys, so your hubby may get asked to have to pee a certain amount first before each chemo, we then got given some steroids tablets and the sickness tablets, which we didn't need, as he didn't feel sick, it's the common side effects like sticky saliva, sore throat, that stopped him to swallow solids which were starting to begin 3wks app. after starting treatment. Another side effect could also be loss of hearing, but as mentioned before, everyone is different, but it is a long way to recovery. After treatment on the way home my husband was asleep for most of the time. It dies take a lot of the patient. All the best for you guys, take one day at the time. X

  • Thanks for replying Beesuit. Good to know you didn't suffer from too much sickness. We will just take it as it comes, as long as we know we are prepared.

  • Thanks so much MRSMM. It is so comforting to hear what other patients with similar treatment to my husband went through, just so we know what to expect, and thanks for your kind words.

  • even though I was given anti sickness meds before chemo, I still had a couple of moments after chemo just before my radiotherapy, where I had to have extra meds to get through it.. one evening I started retching just as I was going in.. they had to fix me up with a strong injection to get me through.. as I've said before, everyone is different, but better safe than sorry..

  • Hi I had a 90 min journey  on a bad day. Traffic wise. to treatment I had same time frame as  treatment as your husband chemo week 1 weeks 3 my last chemo was jointly cancelled. I was one of the people who wasn’t sick at all. I took the medications as I was given I took the anti sickness as directed  even though I didn’t feel sick or nauseous and had the steroids I never missed a tablet. I will add that we were given the cardboard sick bowls just in. case and always had a few in the car. I nibbled finger biscuits as well a( well until I couldn’t and they may have helped).

I will add if your  husband is sick and the medications not working tell the team there’s lots of other anti sickness tablets that they can give. You will see the radiotherapy team every day make friends with them they are the first point if call,, take  some soda water as well to sip I’ve just remembered we always had that in the car.

    best wishes
