Hello All

I am in the process of starting treatment for throat cancer. Doctors say I might need Chemo, radiation and surgery. I am concerned about strength and weight loss since I have to walk everywhere. No support from friends or family. What is the average amount of weight loss and how can keep weight and strength?

Thank you

Keith S.

  • Hi Keith

I lost about 10lb after treatment finished. Nothing during . Do you have a feeding tube fitted? I had a nasogastric one half way through treatment as my mouth was too sore to swallow even water. I made sure I had enough calories through my tube with the food replacement drinks I was supplied with.
I dozed on the sofa for the last two weeks and for two weeks after. I was exhausted. I couldn’t walk further than round the garden.
When will you know what your treatment plan is?

  • Hello Keith, my husband ,alo called Keith, finished his treatment for his throat cancer New Years Eve, in within three weeks starting his treatment so his weight was dropping rather quick, as his throat started to feel very sore, and he needed to get fed through his PEG,he lost roughly 17kg, about 15% of his body weight, he is keeping his weight steady at the moment, but his appearance has changed due to losing that weight so quick,he is also still feeling tired and fatigue, not much energy to do anything, also, some days are better then others, you may also struggle with a very dry mouth and sticky mucus at some point, but your clinical team should be able to help with all these, I am sorry to hear that you don't have any support at home, it is going to be a long bumpy road to recovery,no one should have to do this by themselves. We got treated at the ClatterbridgeCentre in Liverpool, brilliant care there,we also had transport arranged to and from appointments, I would look into this. Wish you all the best for this journey. Stay in touch.Melanie

  • Hi Keith

Don't know about the average weight loss ...depends on a few factors....how well you tolerate the side effects....feeding tubes....temperament...support.

Personally I lost circa 16 kilos over 3-4 weeks during and post Chemoradio for HPV16+ Tonsil Cancer

  • Ouch.....I only weigh 165 pounds now

    Thanks

  • Not yet, I still going to several appointments. Have them all week, but a feeding tube was mentioned

    Thanks

  • I could stand it ...now have a healthy BMI...are you having a feeding tube?

  • I don't know yet

  • Some patients tolerate chemoradio better than others...ask CNS/oncology about feeding tube suitability?

  • Definitely and thanks
