Throat cancer

Hello All

I am in the process of starting treatment for throat cancer. Doctors say I might need Chemo, radiation and surgery. I am concerned about strength and weight loss since I have to walk everywhere. No support from friends or family. What is the average amount of weight loss and how can keep weight and strength?

Thank you

Keith S.

  • Hi Keith

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis.  Once you have a treatment plan we will be better placed to help you.

As to weight loss I put on a few Kg prior to treatment.  Not because I wanted to but because I went and enjoyed all the foods I thought I may miss in future and it was Christmas time.  I had to work hard to keep those KG on during treatment, but with a feeding tube and lots of supplements (Fortisips) I managed it.  Then with the agreement of my dietitian I went back to my "pre binge" weight over a couple of months.

Walking is good for you.  I remember walking to the hospital from where we parked the car (on the street as parking was impossible in the hospital) and around the hospital.  That said the 6 weeks of treatment and the next 6 weeks of recovery saw my step count drop off significantly before bouncing back to a normal 10000 a day.

Sorry to hear you have no support.  It is going to be a tough gig.  Maybe think now about hospital transport or one of the local charities that provide hospital cars.  You are going to be exhausted and public transport is not what you want to be using.

  • but a feeding tube was mentioned

Hi Keith. If you are going to have radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy I would certainly take up the offer of a tube. Good luck

  • I'll look into the transportation with the VA that is doing the service. But I doubt it. Not much is free with U. S. Health care

We are very very lucky in the UK having the National Health Service free at the point of use....and many free support services available to cancer patients

  • How are you doing

    been thinking about you

  • I have been very busy, almost everyday before chemo starts. More tests and even classes. I didn't know there is so much to it. The medical team is fast tracking everything. A bit overwhelming at times, but I am adjusting. Thanks for your concern. It means a lot
