Hi all, just a quick question please. I had a dental check up a few hours before my post treatment MRI results. I was kind of preoccupied that day and didn't question my dentist, so I was just hoping to dip in to the advice any of you may have had after treatment.
She wasn't my usual dentist, very young. I told her about treatment and she checked my gums, all zeros for the first time ever - I've been very thorough and it's paid off. Anyway, at the end of the appointment she said my teeth are in great condition, she doesn't need to see me for a year and I could use normal fluoride toothpaste instead of Duraphat. As I said, I had my mind on my upcoming results and just accepted the advice. Now I'm questioning it slightly. Does it seem reasonable? Has anyone else had this advice? Thanks
Hey Beepa, My consultant and the hospital dental surgeon told me i needed Duraphat for life. My own dentist said the same as yours, that there was no need for it. I went onto normal toothpaste for a while as a result and it negatively affected my teeth. I have a new dentist now who recommended i stay on duraphat. Obviously i am not a dentist and we are all different, but that was my experience.
Hey Beepa, i was on here asking exactly the same question as you a few years back since my dentist at the time was at odds with my consultant and the dental hospital.
You might want to look at flouride varnishes as an option as well.
Edit, just seen you had a flouride varnish :)
I got a fluoride varnish so I got one thing right!
You don't need a fluoride tray AND a varnish. Simply get a varnish every three months. I was told Duraphat for life. Your young lady is wrong. You should tell her next time that patients who have had RT and have xerostomia need extra protection forever. My gums are all zero too but we are still prone to caries especially at the gum line
I asm seen every six months but my dentist and every six by my hygienist. I get a varnish each time
