Hi all, just a quick question please. I had a dental check up a few hours before my post treatment MRI results. I was kind of preoccupied that day and didn't question my dentist, so I was just hoping to dip in to the advice any of you may have had after treatment.

She wasn't my usual dentist, very young. I told her about treatment and she checked my gums, all zeros for the first time ever - I've been very thorough and it's paid off. Anyway, at the end of the appointment she said my teeth are in great condition, she doesn't need to see me for a year and I could use normal fluoride toothpaste instead of Duraphat. As I said, I had my mind on my upcoming results and just accepted the advice. Now I'm questioning it slightly. Does it seem reasonable? Has anyone else had this advice? Thanks

  • I am surprised that the young dentist did not recognise the need for Duraphat and more regular reviews.  I know they are trained in H&N cancer (at least at the dental school in Plymouth).   It is best to keep on top of things and nip any issues in the bud.

I have a minior issue of wearing away my teeth through the additional chewing and my dentist is awaiting a double check with the oral surgeons at the hospital before undertaking a repair.   H&N cancer is still relatively rare so I think most dentists err on the side of caution.

  • Hi I’m 6 years post chemo radiotherapy and both my consultant and dentist agree that I will be on duraphat for rest of my life. I would query that statement with your consultant.

  • The MaxFax consultant at my hospital cut off any scope for error/lack of understanding or experience by writing to my dental practice setting out what needed to happen with my ongoing care….including the stipulation of Duraphat for life…although it is my GP who gives me the prescription for this.  I am using dental trays with Duraphat or generic equivalent for 10 minutes daily.  Bit of a challenge because the stuff foams up horribly after the first 5 minutes…but if it saves my teeth then so be it.
