Hi I'm 11 weeks post RT now. I'm still experiencing water blisters in my mouth a few every day. They are excruciatingly painful and although last about hour or two can really take the breath out of you. People say they are normal and will go. I spoke to my cancer nurse yesterday and she said they can last up to six months. I have cut out citrus fruits etc but they still are coming. Getting them at the back of your throat is really awful. Today especially has been so tough..I'm using claregel and mouth washes but by god they are so bad. Will this ever end. I'm having a very tough time with them. I had my bloods done recently and all ok but not my b12 wonder would that contribute or are they gonna just appear regardless. My cancer nurse said it's the saliva and bacteria that causes them. God I couldn't go on for eight months with these. Any other suggestions for easing them please xx
My cancer nurse said it's the saliva and bacteria that causes them.
She’s right. The whole inside of your mouth and throat is perforated with tiny salivary glands each with a duct into your mouth. The ducts get blocked up which is when you get these blisters as the glands get filled up.
They really don’t have much to do with what you eat.
I didn’t suffer too much but I was told to keep the bacteria in my mouth down with corsodyl mouthwash. Soluble aspirin swilled around in your mouth might ease the pain. Did you get Oxetecaine while you were in treatment? You could try that.
Can you chew gum? Keeping the saliva flowing might keep the ducts clear?

Hi Dani yes I can chew chewing gum. I have been doing that a lot recently and I constantly drink water. I never had oxetecaine. What was that for? I'm using ultra Dex mouth wash twice daily and oral 7 dry mouth relief. How many times a day can you use these mouth washes. Will it be harmful to your teeth if used too often. These blisters are just awful. I don't know how I could get through another 6 months of them. Thank you Dani for your advice x
I’m not familiar with ultra dex so looked it up. It’s antibacterial so should do the same job as corsodyl. Oral 7 can be used as often as you need but I tended to use BioXtra which is similar only twice a day.
I had Oxetecaine during treatment as a topical analgesic. It’s like gaviscon with a local anaesthetic. Swilling it around the mouth then swallowing numbed things a bit.
Are you using any mouth prep with SLS in it? Duraphat is the main culprit. That’s worth exploring too. I couldn’t use it for a year.

Do you think your mouth is ready for a fluoride varnish? Check with your dentist? Then you could dispense with the Duraphat for three months.

Is it just a varnish on your teeth .
Yes. Here is a link explaining it.
It’s more often used for children where it’s applied twice a year. I have mine done every three months

Does it work xx
Yes.
I wish I had been aware of it before treatment. I would have had it done to cover those weeks I couldn’t take care of my mouth properly. Thankfully my teeth survived nevertheless
