conflicting diet gubbins

hello,

i have read on the macmillan site regarding diet - saying no to mayonnaise, yoghurt and tea and coffee, when i went for the chemo yesterday, they offered me tea, coffee,  yoghurt, tuna and mayo cheese and mayo, egg and mayo, prawn and mayo sandwiches, which i turned down, so i am very confused about this, why when you are in chemo are they offering you things you shouldn't eat and drink or are they ok?

  • Hi Ichi,

It's Megan here from Macmillan's Online Community team. I saw your post and wanted to ask for some information if that's ok? I'm sorry that there has been some confusion after reading some information about diet, if you need some guidance about this please do contact the Nurses on the  Macmillan Support Line. They are available to help every day from 8am to 8pm and to get in touch you can call 0808 808 00 00, send an email or start a live webchat during the opening hours.

I wanted to ask if you could share a link to the information page on the Macmillan website, please? I'd like to share your feedback with our Feedback team to have this information page reviewed.

Macmillan has a specialist cancer information team that produces all of the information resources and makes sure all the content is up to date.

If you'd like to discuss this directly with our feedback team, please fill in this feedback form and they will be happy to assist if it's easier for you to send the link to us directly, you can email community@macmillan.org.uk

    Best wishes,

  • Hi   I was going to reply to this yesterday but for some reason your post disappeared. Basically you need to avoid raw food that might harbour bacteria so that means raw eggs ( mayonnaise but hard boiled eggs are ok) unpasteurised cheese and yogurt,  seafood like prawns and mussels which are filter feeders.
There is chemo and chemo though. Some types absolutely slaughter your immune system, cisplatin not so much.
Ask your chemo nurses for an explanation?
    Hope that helps.

  • hello, it was not on here, apologies, it was in the booklet you get at the hospital, on the macmillan booklet stand, about foods to avoid whilst on chemo, so i just thought it was odd, that they were offering the things you are supposed to avoid and the coffee and tea was in the sheets printed off at the hospital about the chemo, maybe it just depends on which medication you are being given?

  • thank you Dani, i read about the sea food and raw eggs that is why i found it strange that they were giving these out to patients, it just confused me a bit

  • Thank you for replying, was it the 'Eating problems and cancer' booklet?

You've had some great guidance from Dani already and to avoid any further concerns I would speak to your healthcare team at the hospital about this before your next treatment appointment.

Please do have a chat with our Nurses on the Support Line about food and nutrition as they are trained professionals who can provide trusted cancer information.

Thanks Megan. This is the advice I give. Ignore anything but what your team tell you and if they haven’t told you ….. ask.
