Hi, I seem to have increasing problems with dry mouth. It started off just in the mornings but seems to persist throughout the day now. I spoke to my GP last week and he prescribed Glandosane (saliva spray). My local pharmacy didn't have it nor could they order it. Tried a bigger pharmacy and they said it was out of stock and maybe no longer being manufactured (!). They suggested Salivix (sp?). I have contacted my GP with this information but just wondered if anyone is using anything that a) works and b) is readily available... Or is there anything that I can buy over the counter that has worked? I have been in a back & forth with my medical centre since the beginning of November and all the while still having problems with dry mouth. Any advice greatly appreciated...
I chew sugar free gum and it really helps. I haven't had any of the mouth sprays prescribed, so I dont know about them
Salivix works well and is available OTC and on prescription
But the simplest and cheapest method is to spritz your mouth with a pocket water spray which is what hygienists specialising in HNC late effects recommend
Have you tried frequent use of BioXtra mouthwash too?
Strange that it should be getting worse. Are there any food triggers?

Hi I chewed sugar free gum make sure it’s got xyitol in it. Also a small spray bottle with water can help , tip from a cancer nurse who runs a late effects clinic.
At night time I still use xyimelts available online not prescription. I also had auricular acupuncture which kick started my salvia.boots do aa dry mouth spray in a handbag size bottle it’s peppermint so depends how delicate your mouth is I couldn’t use it in early days.
You might not think it but it does get better it takes time, I can now go hours without even thinking dry mouth.I never thought that time would come but slowly it does..
AsDaninsays bioxtra on prescription is a ph neutral mouthwash and mild.

I think maybe coffee/tea have been a trigger but I've cut out caffeinated drinks now. The more I feel better, the more visitors I have and so am talking more which is maybe a problem (haha!). I've not used BioXtra mouthwash but will give that a go. Thank you so much :-)
Hi Yes talking a lot especially in early into recovery is drying and tea and coffee dehydrate you. Try herbal teas I drunk them prior to treatment and there’s so many flavours am sure yiu can find one that suits. Plus you’re getting your water content as well
Chamomile is soothing keep off ginger for now too early it burns.

Hi, I’m prescribed oralieve which is supposed to be a saliva substitute , couple of sprays helps but doesn’t last long just gives instant relief in my case. Chewing helps but it tends to irritate my mouth even sugar free
I have been using it, but I've never been a fan of gum... Useful to know about this spray, thank you :-)
No probs , I got it at the cancer centre and on prescription since , it’s about £6 a bottle if doc doesn’t prescribe but can’t see why he/she wouldn’t
Try herbal teas
Thats all I drink now except for two cups of good coffee. Cant start the day without one
Pukka tea is good

Hi Liesle
The mouth spray you mentioned does seem to go out of stock every now and then. I have used Xylimelts in the past and found they worked quite well. You can buy them online although in Australia I can get them over the counter at some chemists. Lately I have been using Biotene or Oral 7mouth gel. I put a dab on a cotton bud and spread it on my tongue. I have found it works very well especially at night when my mouth gets the driest. I buy it at the chemists over the counter. It may be called something different in the U.K. but I am sure that there are gels for dry mouth there as well. I find it lasts quite a good length of time so I sleep quite well now.
