  • Hi Turi. Each of us are individuals but there us a standard protocol.
Surgery is a good option if clear cancer free margins can be achieved by the surgeon and there is little impact on major function of the throat. The problem with oropharyngeal cancer is that it often spreads to the lymph nodes in the neck and sometimes this spread is so small it can’t be seen in scans so radiotherapy is used. Some throat cancers like mine couldn’t be operated on so I had the standard 30 days of radiation split over 6 weeks and no surgery.
If the cancer is advanced ( more than T2 with spread to lymph nodes in the scans) you get Cisplatin chemotherapy as well.
Some centres surgically remove lots of lymph nodes in the neck. This is called a neck dissection
I know you are waiting for results. All this will be explained in depth to you by your team.

  • I know how you feel

I;m just in such as state.

I was the same but once you have a plan of treatment laid down for you I promise you will feel much better.
Most OP cancer is HPV positive and curable. The treatment is tough but it’s only for a few weeks and life returns to almost normal.
Hunker down. Don’t be brave. Say if you aren’t right Take all the pills and potions the hospital give you. Try not to lose weight. The better fed you are the quicker you heal.
Don’t be afraid of feeling lost and sorry for yourself. You’re allowed.
I’m four plus years clear and it’s all a distant memory. I know that sounds as far as the moon to you but time passes very quickly.
    You’ll get there.

    That’s normal

I have been here for over four years, I dip in and out of a couple of other forums and I subscribe to a few cancer blogs and I have never heard of that happening to anyone
