Hi all,
I am 8 weeks out from chemoradiation.
My cancer is base of tongue and nodes on both sides.
My pain has generally gone away and (with the agreement of my team) I am slowly reducing my pain relief.
This week, I started to get some new pain underneath my tongue on one side. It feels like an ulcer, sharp when touched or if I wiggle my tongue, but there is nothing visible. No swelling or lumps.
A few weeks ago, I had pain in lots of places, but this new pain has worried me in case the cancer has already started to come back in my tongue. To be honest, I think that this is highly unlikely. I have only recently been clobbered with rad and chemo and my original PET scan didn't show anything on my tongue, other than right at the base.
I am seeing my team next week and I will of course mention it. But in the meantime. did anyone else develop sores under the tongue or other parts of their mouth, after treatment and after most of the swelling and pain had gone away?
I am probably just worrying about nothing.
Best wishes to all
Steve
Base of tongue, HPV positive, T4aN2CM0
Hi Steve
Yes... I had new sores erupt after treatment. I think it's par for the course.
Early recurrence is pretty rare
Are you eating? Have you tried something that could irritate?
I'm sure your mind will be put at rest next week
Best of luck
Dani
Base of tongue cancer. T2N0M0 6 weeks Radiotherapy finished January 2019
Thanks, Dani.
I am still 100% tube fed and just trying to swallow some liquids. So, I am not eating food that could have caught it. I am doing the swallowing exercises and that includes moving my tongue in different directions. Maybe it's tongue strain ??
Anyway, good to know that early reoccurrences are rare. You have helped to stop me from spiralling.

Good evening Steve, personally i think you are worrying about it too much which is quite natural as we all have different side effects during and after the treatment, eight weeks does sound a bit early for anything sinister returning but its always best to get it checked out just in case so it good news that you will be seeing your consultant next week. Wishing you all the best for you continued recovery, good luck, take care.

Hi Steve, I am 20 weeks out of chemoradiation for base of tongue and nodes on both sides. I often got pain like an ulcer and it would disappear pretty quick. Even a tiny bit of toothpaste could cause irritation to parts of my tongue and my teeth would sometimes rub. Tongue strain is also a thing! My tumour was on left side of base and it would be painful to move my tongue to the right for weeks.
I kept a diary of aches & pains which later became my food diary, when I go to clinic the dietician, speech therapist etc really appreciate the info and I like to look back at it to see how far I've come. I write my queries in there too in case I forget what I wanted to ask in clinic.
Hope this helps, all the best
Liz
