Hi everyone,

My partner had stage 2 throat cancer a few years back. He had Radiotheraphy treatment  and he is in remission now.

His problem is he is suffering from a dry throat  that turns into a tickle in the back of his throat when he tries to eat or drink sometimes. The only thing that helps is cold milk. His anxiety does not help either. As he is scared he will chock. If he contious to eats or drinks when this happens.

He has tried a synthetic salvia for dry mouths. And also  Biotene moisturising mouthwash. But neither really help.

Does anyone else have this problem? And can anyone give me advice please. He is getting really frustrated and upset over this to point he is to scared to eat.  He also suffers from social phobia on top of this this been for a while now this problem of dry throat and at times dry mouth.

With thanks Dee

  • Good evening Dee, the only reason i can see this happens is because of the dry mouth so he must drink because i expect his saliva glands have become less active due to the treatment. I drink all day otherwise my mouth and throat dry out because some of my saliva glands were removed and when it becomes dry i have a similar feeling to your partner. Choking should not be an issue after two years so i would make an appointment with your GP or his consultant, one to help with his anxiety and secondly to get his swallowing sorted out otherwise it can cause more serious issues, like dehydration and malnutrition. Maybe he needs to have his throat examined to make sure nothing is causing this tickling feeling. Some people suck on a tablet/ sweet that slowly melts in the mouth giving them some relief, but i cannot remember the name i know the last four lets are "melts" . If i remember i will let you know, i know people on here that use them so hopefully they will read your post and reply. Wishing you both all the best, take care.

  • Hi Dee. Sorry you’ve found yourself on here but welcome.
I’m almost 5 years post treatment the tablets Chris is referring to are xyimelts available online I use 1/2,if one every night. I still take  water to bed I can sip without waking now I’m so used to it. Ti encourage my saliva glands to kickstart I paid for  a course if auricular acupuncture it helped me if course it’s not a guarantee.
I also chew sugar free gum tk remind my saliva glands to work. A late affects  nurse gave thus tip on a webinar carry a  spray bottle  a pocket size snd spray inside your mouth csn help as opposed to constantly drinking snd washing any saliva away. As for food I used to sip warm herbal just enough to moisten mouth the put food in and follow on with a larger sip to wash it down. I presume he’s being seen regularly and having the nasal scope ?
met do have to get used tk a new wsy if doing what for others is normal but now there’s very few things I can’t eat. Spicy being the main issues for me.

Hi Dee. I’ll echo what Chris has said. He should contact his hospital team to get it checked out. It’s probably nothing that proper lubrication won’t fix but it’s pointless worrying so best get his mind put at rest.
Do you still have his CNS contact number?

  • Hi Chris,

Thank you for the advice. I told him what you said.  Catch 22 with anxiety makes things worse. Even going to drs makes it worse. Noted about the gum you said.

    Thanks again Dee

  • Hi Hazel,

Thank you for the reply and the tips with sips of water before and after eating. And the tiny spray bottle with water great ideas. The xyimelts too.

He was discharged a while back from hospital. For his check ups. As was good to not come back. I think anxiety and stress is his main problem as well adding to his problem.

  • Hi Beesuit,

He knows in his own heart of hearts he needs checked over, but fear is ruling him. We can all relate to that. And defo sounds like he needs proper lubrication for throat. As no lumps or pain nothing and voice is fine.

    Thanks Beesuit for reply.

Sorry guys i hope you are all in a good place. Sorry forgot to say. As anxious myself trying to help him.

    Best wishes Dee

  • Don’t ever apologise. We all know about anxiety. For some of us it’s a never ending presence. Good luck and I hope you both get an answer and that he remains in remission for many many years.
