osteoradionecrosis

Hi I'm sure this is what's called. I've had substantial surgery on my jaw plus chemotherapy ( easy peasy) but the radiotherapy has knocked me for six. I've had bad lympodema that has actually cleared up nicely and quickly.

But the osteoradionecrosis is a battle. It's worse in the morning and once I get moving it alleviates the terrible stiffness and inability to move my neck and lower jaw easily.

Anyone have any tips or advice to help?

Nick

  • Osteoradionecrosis is where the bone in the jaw dies and it can even fracture

Di you mean fibrosis and or Trismus?
There are exercises for both you can get from your team.

    • I have a very stiff neck from previous radiation they told me it’s Radiation Fibrosis Syndrome and scar tissue from the neck dissection surgery
  • Hi so do I. Although I thought it was called osteonecrosis. It's appeared as bad as this in the past few months although radiotherapy finished late August 2022. Mine is like a stiff neck and top shoulders, numb ears. I find walking infact any exercise can help. I could not feel it for months as I had lymphoedema. That I have cracked and said gbye n good riddance. It can't be permanent whatever it's called so hang in there and do what the team ask. Fight it with all your strength

  • Mind wasn’t too bad at first but has progressively got worse over the years and they took a lot of muscle from my shoulder which is now much lower than the other one

get all the help you can get now to stop it getting any worse as it can do years up the line

I wasn’t offered any rehabilitation after surgery and probably too late for me now to improve matters

  • Although I thought it was called osteonecrosis.

    Osteo…. Bone

    Radio …..Radiation

    Necrosis …..Death

  • I thought that ORN is the risk around tooth extractions and the healing of the jaw bone after wards but I don’t know for sure

I was told I had severe RFS in my neck muscles hence the stiffness I have

  • ORN is a type of radiation fibrosis. The blood vessels to the bone are fibrosed so that it doesn’t heal well. Extractions are a risk as is infection from bad gum health. It’s a lifetime risk. The top jaw has a better blood supply so is less affected than the lower one.
We have to be aware of fibrosis of our carotid arteries too and the associated stroke risk. RT keeps on giving.

  • I had to have a wisdom tooth out the day after I found out about my recurrence cancer in case the treatment is radiation

it was bottom jaw on the tumour side and it’s not healed yet I’m praying that it does don’t need that worry on top of everything else
