Hi again all,

My husband will be undergoing 35 rounds(?) of radiotherapy for T4 N2b M0 base of the tongue cancer.

Regards radiotherapy - what do you know now that you wish you knew then?

e.g I hadn’t realised radiation can/will burn the skin on the way in and out

thank you in advance x

  • I had terrible constipation a couple of times too, despite mutiple Laxido and Ducosate. Once I had to go to hospital for an enema. The next time, I felt I couldn't walk with this feeling of a bowling ball sitting in there and -  apologies for being disgusting - I used my latex-gloved finger to break it up and hook it out. I hope you never need this useful tip!

  • Hi CatSW9 Fortunately I didnt suffer  badly from constipa†ion but I knew a bloke who died from being impacted , not a nice way to go. I ditched the pain relief as soon as I could which helped big time imho

  • Blimey Min! That’s dreadful. Presumably he couldn’t get medical help in time.

Horrendous. My team were really on my case and I got interrogated about my bowel habits before being asked about the treatment and how I felt!
Laxido was in my first carrier bag of meds.

  • I only knew that this could happen as i remember when Elvis died they said his death could have been linked to this, yet its never explained by drs or dieticians. I take it every day otherwise it creeps up on me and its not very pleasant. Take care everyone.

  • Hi All, I too suffered with dreadful constipation when on RT/CT and being RIG tube fed and also ended up in A+E one night with impaction. Sitting in the waiting area for 6 hours when into my 6th week of treatment was an horrendous experience.

I am now 20 months post treatment and feeling well however I don’t think that my bowel habits ever fully recovered to normal ( sorry if anyone is eating). There has been a lot of focus on gut health and “the micro biome” lately and foods that encourage the healthy gut bacteria, in particular fermented foods and probiotics. I have tried to increase my consumption of these and it seems that things  have improved although this may be due to normal recovery.

I stress that I am NOT advocating anything here but just reflecting on my experience.

All the best for Mr Pook’s treatment.

  • Hi JohnK55 That sounds bad but great that you are on the mend , Loads of oats will help . Something I have sussed is it is so easy for things to spiral quickly out of control if you dont keep on the ball. I have been rough for nearly 2 weeks from a lung infection or the like but got some antibiotics and on the mend now Thank God All the Best Regards Minmax
