My daughter is an RN and one of the educators at her work has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and will be starting radiotherapy soon.

His colleagues would like to put together a care package for him, so I'm looking for suggestions about what to put in it - and especially for things which aren't obvious.

Many thanks for your help.

  • Hi Lolie. What a kind thought.

You might consider some lip balm, soothing mouthwash like Bioxtra, warm socks, a heated blanket to snuggle in,

I don't know much about oesophageal cancer but you could ask in the group Oesophageal Cancer Group

We have a Champ who has had radiotherapy for the same so I'll tag him and perhaps he can suggest a few things

  • Thank you.  I thought of a few things based on my own experience of chemo and radiotherapy but I had SBRT to a different target area.

  • Hi Lolie

I've just finished radiotherapy for oesophagal cancer.  The main thing that helped me was Neutrogena Deep Moisture moisturiser.  The skin becomes very tender, itchy and sore. I eventually lost all the skin on the front of my neck but this moisturiser helped both during and after treatment.  I also liked mentos mint's or fruit pastilles to just suck as I can't swallow anything. Lip balm was nice as well.  They'll need a good book to take to appointments as there is regularly a delay to being seen. I love my Snuggy for when I got home as I regularly felt very lethargic and subsequently quite cold.

Hope this gives you some ideas.  Take care

  • Hi Lolie My son got me Audble on my phone and I listened to cheves and wooster red by Stephen fry. I just recommend it to my son to get it for his father in law who is starting Chemo tomorrow on his birthday  and he has been diagnosed with two types of cancer poor bloke .  All the Best regards Minmax

  • I was diagnosed with two different types of primary cancer in the same year - the second was present when I was being treated for the first but not biopsied until I had finished chemo for the first.  It's definitely a bit intense.

  • Hi Lolie My sons father in law has just been diagnosed with some rare form of cancer and a bone cancer also . Poor bloke is in terrible pain and in hospital and starting chemo tomorrow on his birthday
