Hi everyone...me again with another question! I am midway through week 5 of my 33 radiotherapy treatments. I have noticed over the last couple of days I am coughing up some pretty horrendous looking mucous/things from my throat. I am assuming this is par for the course at this stage in treatment so just looking for a bit of reassurance I think. Many thanks Karen x

  • Good heads up about the blood too...

Yes specks and streaks are par for the course too.

  • Karen, i was given a card to call if i had concerns at all, and i called them the first time i saw streaks of blood in the morning. I think i also called when i started getting dizziness on standing suddenly (also apparently common)

Do call your team when you need them, they will be able to reassure you if needed.

As for the nausea, i escaped it but i took several antiemetics religiously whether i was feeling nauseous or not.

It might be worth looking at different meds, i believe i was on ondansetron and dexamethasone - i had a dose before treatment and i took it as soon as allowed after treatment even if i was not nauseous.

  • Thank you for the additional information really appreciated. I never think about ringing my local head and neck nurse, but will bear this in mind as an avenue too. Good advice about the nausea medication...as is the case with all medication I am finding. Best wishes Karen

  • If i had to name one medication that must be taken religiously regardless of whether you think it is needed, its got to be laxido if taking any opoids at all Slight smile

Good luck, and any queries at all please ask - this site was a life safer for me (its been over two years since i was diagnosed now)

  • Thanks Trev, had a pretty rough night. I am going to go in early for my treatment today to see if I can get them to change my medication. Best wishes Karen

  • I had a CNS meeting today to get up to speed with side effects ahead of RT start and it reiterates what most have said on here. Liquids, steam and the knowledge it will pass were the main messages to me. Hope goes as well as can be expected

  • GeneS thank you so much for your reply, all information welcome and helpful! This will be my mantra I am sure... everything will pass. Good luck getting your treatment started. Best wishes Karen
