Hi I am new on here. My husband was diagnosed with mouth cancer in April and we have been waiting for an appt for surgery the cancer on his tongue has got a lot bigger now and he is suffering a lot with the pain. He has a date now though for 50% possibly more removal of tongue, teeth removed, neck dissection. Had anybody had this surgery? Wondering what to expect recovery wise? Was speech ok? Etc etc

Tgank you xx

  • Hi again. The surgeon said it was very rare and  know very little about it or what causes it. The C was in the middle left part of the tongue not the base.

  • Ah. Thanks. I was on the wrong track and apologise.

  • No need to apologise.  You're doing a great job on here.

  • Thanks. I try. I’ve had a look round and found exactly what the bacterium is. Very rare. I know it doesn’t help being unique but it likely means you’ll have their complete undivided attention. Xx

  • Hi Cala

I had a major tumour under and in the base of my tongue. Unfortunately, 6 weeks of radiography only shrunk it by 2 thirds, so July last year was left with the only option to go for a major 12-hour operation to completely remove my tongue, larynx and all the soft tissue in my throat. . they sealed the division between my windpipe and food tube. They carried out a tractotomy at the same time. The trackie is for life and i cannot talk have no tongue or teeth so have to liquidise all my food and drink it from a beaker.

The laser treatment affected my jaw and i am having to stretch it as cannot open mouth very far but getting there.

What has really surprised me was how little pain i suffered from. the first 2 to 3 days would have been painful, but they gave me a button to press to administer a drug i assume it was morphine. to Control the pain. after that i just occasionally took paracetamol. I have very good morale and a very positive outlook for the future even though i am 71. This is so important in your fight against cancer.

you need to look after yourself as well as he will need a lot of TLC from you as my wife found it very draining. The most fortunate thing for me is we retired 11 years ago to France and the health service here is 1st class. once they realised the radiography had not done its jobs. they operated within 2 months' have had a few small ops since then and the waiting time is normally 2 to 3 weeks amazing. if you want any more information or just a chat, please contact me

  • I am awaiting the same procedure (6th Oct) so this thread was very helpful, hope everything went well or is now on a plan to resolve.

  • All Things going well, and they hope in 2 years' time my throat would have healed enough to Zap the tiny tumour left in my throat
