Hi can anyone please help. I'm trying to understand why the surgeon would suggest radical neck dissection on my 30yr old son when scans showed no spread. I'm sure is all precautionary but am I right to think the procedure is risky possibly if it's not needed. Advise and people that have had this experience I would appreciate your experience in this
Hi Bev
I had a neck dissection at the same time as my robotic surgery to remove the tumour from the base of my tongue. The nodes were showing no sign of involvement on the scans but the surgeon removed a certain number of them to biopsy as a precaution during the op. Once she'd got to a certain stage and was happy that there was no nodal involvement she stopped.
Hope all goes well for your son.

Don't mind at all Bev.
I was in hospital for 11 days after my op but your son is having more surgery than me so will obviously be in longer. Your son's hospital stay does sound about on par with others for similar surgery.
Recovery once home was about 4 weeks for eating, longer for the neck dissection. Do remember though that we all react quite differently to treatment. I didn't have to have a tracheostomy and the surgery was in a different place to remove the tumour.
