My clinic team say do not take iburofen.  I have a very swollen throat and so difficult to  swallow.  1 week left of radiation.  Can anyone suggest a medicine to ask for?

Thanks

Carran

  • Hi Carran welcome to  the forum. I just popped in as sometimes at the weekend things can b a bit quieter so didnt want you to wait and  suffer with pain.

Do you have  a Boots Chemist anywhere nearby you as they tend to be open longer on Saturdays and they can advise as they have Pharmacists there who would know whats best for you given your history.

  • Hi Carran. Any reason why you can’t take ibuprofen  medically  ? You shoujd have an emergency cancer unit number to contact the  on call oncologist. Do you have caphosol to Gargle with ? Or make a salt and baking powder solution 1 teaspoon of each to one litre water. I also gargles with soluble aspirin spitting it out. To get totally honest there’s not much at this stage you’ve done really well if it’s only just starting. You can also try difflam bought from chemist.

  • Hi Carran. Taking ibuprofen with a swollen throat is dangerous as your team have pointed out. A pharmacy will be useless I’m afraid. Take Hazel’s advice re the soluble aspirin and contact the emergency number you have. You could probably get by with a little morphine for your last few weeks.
    Best of luck xx

  • Hi Carran,

Not much to add to what everyone else has said. I too wasn't allowed ibuprofen. By this stage I was on fentanyl, paracetamol, oramorph & gargling aspirin. I also had oxetacine & difflam before eating. I needed to top up food with 3 Ensure as eating was harder. You are doing well though. The emergency oncologist is best person to ask.

Big tip for this week, make sure by Wednesday you have asked for plenty of pain relief, even with the next step up from what you are taking. Getting everything I needed in enough quantities from gp was a nightmare in first 2-3 weeks after treatment. Hubbie did 2hr round trip to hospital to get bits on blue prescription when local pharmacy couldn't get things. Also have enough polymem for neck if it is getting dry and sore. They took 5 days to get hold of.

    Take care, Ronnie

Thank you all. I'm on morphine, patch, pragabalin and paracetemol.  Just ben a tough weekend, ended up in bed

  • Hi Carran. Yes it can be absolutely rubbish and drugs and bed are sometimes the only place to be. Hang on. You’ll get there

  • Hi Bed snd rest is the best place for the next few weeks in between hospital snd feeds. Remember after your last treatment the radiotherapy keeps on working.

I've spent the most of the last 2 weeks in bed.  Terrible throat at the weekend and a gargle.  Given antibiotics.  Last treatment today then next chapter for post treatment.
