Loose tooth and 3.5 yrs post RT

Hi, i am 43, 3.5yrs post RT (60gy over 30 rounds) to the surgical bed the right side of the tongue for T2N0 tongue cancer. I have been very OCD with my dental hygiene, duraphat and flossing 3 times a day and regular appointment with dentist. I now have a loose lower jaw incisor. This has been on the watch list as I had receded gums. I have scheduled an emergency appointment with the dentist but I am really worried about the eventuality of the loose tooth, possible extraction and the ORN really scares me.

Anyone else had an extraction after RT ? Any experiences to share as I have been so anal about dental hygiene and im now losing sleep over this loose tooth.

Thanks

  • I had a wisdom tooth out after RT. It was done at the hospital that treated me and recovery was uneventful.

  • Thats good to know Dani. Im reading other related posts as well. Is it a standard to prescribe antibiotics +vit e if the tooth needs coming out.

  • It depends. If it’s loose already I suspect they will just take it out.

  • I had a tooth extracted a few yeas after radiotherapy. I was referred by my regular dentist to a specialist dentist who contacted my radiotherapy doctor before he went ahead and extracted the tooth. I had no issues after the extraction.

I too was very careful with my dental hygiene but same as you have an issue with receding gums. Unfortunately something that just happens sometimes no matter how careful you are.

  • Good evening Heinze, I'm the same as Dani and Sophie, where I had to have a tooth removed, it was one of the big back ones but was done by my consultant's team and not a dentist.  Like the others i have had no further issues with my teeth. Im sure everything will be ok. Take care.

Its sometimes not easy but its worth it !

  • Thankyou all for sharing your experience...its very reassuring.

I saw my dentist today, per him the tooth is slightly mobile, no way near extraction :) it was music to my ears.
