Hi all.

My dad finished 6 weeks of Radiotherapy a few weeks ago. His original diagnosis was SCC, unknown primary but spread to several lymph nodes.

From around week 3 of the RT treatment he became reliant on the PEG taking ensures and he managed to maintain his weight throughout. However in the last week he is feeling increasingly nauseous all the time. He is yet to eat any food, this is not due to pain in his mouth or throat, but due to food aversion and feeling sick.

He has been sick on some mornings, but is using the nebuliser a couple of times a day and does not feel there is too much mucus in the back of his throat.

He is taking one sachet of long lasting morphine at night, but no other medicines other than occasional laxatives. He will slowly decrease the morphine medicine.

Does anyone have any advice for dealing with sickness/or for making food more appealing/overcoming food aversion?

Many thanks,

Kelly.

  • Hi Kelly

It might be an idea to speak to your dad's clinical nurse or dietician.  Some people have a similar reaction to certain supplements.  There are alternative ones available.

  • Yes i tend to agree with Linda with the different reactions to food supplements, you can get Ensure, Fortisips, and Aymes ( you mix this one with water or milk ) so it comes in a sachet while most of the others come in a bottle pre-mixed. Always remember not to put too much through in one session as sometimes the stomach shrinks when its not being used for whole food, i have been sick once because i was feeding too much in one session. Must admit they are not the most appetizing drink supplement. So as Linda said a call to your dad's dietitian will help also an anti-sick tablet can be taken/prescribed if deemed necessary. I hope you manage to find a solution, all the best, take care.

Thanks Linda, good advice, I've contacted then and will meet them tomorrow. He's been fine with Ensure up until this week, hoping it passes quickly.
