Hi Everyone,  I've just joined in the hope that I can help my brother. He has been diagnosed with S4N2 oral cancer. He is booked in for a pet scan at the end of this month. If no other sites are found he will be put forward for major surgery.  Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated.  Thank you

  • Hi Jye. Welcome to our community but so sorry you have had to find us. I’m afraid I don’t recognise your description S4N2. Do you mean stage 4 with cancer in two lymph nodes? Where is his cancer? Is he having radiotherapy as well. If you give us a little more information the replies you get will make more sense.
It’s great you’ve come here nevertheless. Your brother will need support

    Best wishes

    Thank you for speedy reply.

Yeah, primary site is upper rhs of mouth and has been given a stage 4 assessment.

And yes, he has 2 lymph nodes on rhs of neck and 1 on the lhs too which are confirmed as secondary sites.

The consultant has said that radiotherapy and chemotherapy will be required after operation.

    I hope this information helps

    Thanks again

  • Hi again.
my first tip is please stay off Google

much of the information is inaccurate some outdated and also difficult to navigate unless you are medically qualified. You will frighten yourself to death

Giving you chapter and verse is probably information overload at present so come back as things progress and there are lots of people here to help decipher and lend support.
can your brother take somebody with him to his appointments? It’s easy to miss things and another pair of ears is invaluable.
Make sure the consultants explain things you don’t understand.
It is going to be a hard few months I’m afraid

    Best wishes.

  • Good evening Jye, try not to get afraid, it all sounds frightening at the moment but as the days go by appointment by appointment it gets a lot clearer. It is common practice to have radio and chemo after an operation mainly as a "belt and braces" making sure they have removed any last remnants of the tumour. When i was first diagnosed with mouth cancer in 2008 i was so surprised and shocked as i had never heard of this type of cancer. The scan will give the consultant and his/her team a clearer picture of what is happening and what they intend to do where they will help your brother as much as possible with advice and help. I used to take each day as it came trying not to think ahead too much, but we all have our own way of coping, and I'm sure you and your brother will manage to get through it all. Please let us know how things go, we will be only too pleased to offer our advice on our past experiences. Wishing you and your brother all the best, take care.
