Tonsil site still feels quite raw 5 months on.

Just a quick question. I’m 5 months+ post treatment  (right tonsillectomy, neck dissection and chemoradiation) and feeling well in myself. However, the site where my right tonsil was still feels weird and sort of raw. As though it hasn’t healed over properly. There is no soreness and I can swallow food quite normally. I know the tonsil site will have taken a hell of a battering from the RT, but should I be expecting for it to have healed over by now? Any advice gratefully received, as ever.

  • RT can leave you with neuropathic pain. My cancer was at the back of my tongue which is devoid of sensory innervation but I have a burning feeling on the side that took the hit too. Maybe that’s what it is. What does it look like?

  • Hi Dani. It looks OK, as far as I can see anyway. No pain though.

  • I doubt it’s anything. Run it past your next consult but honestly I wouldn’t worry.

  • Tonsil removal sites can be quite tender.  18 months on I still feel it occasionally - and you've had radio on top of surgery.  It seems like not a lot is needed to upset the site.  When they operated on me in March this year they tubed me through my nose and scratched one of the sites (I had both taken).  In all honesty it felt like a tonsillectomy all over again for the 10+ days it took to settle down!!!

It may just be "normal use" that is upsetting the site.  Difficult to describe as it is not painful on a daily basis, but it still makes itself know as part of the "new normal".

  • Hi Mark

I had robotic surgery on the base of my tongue 3 years ago now and it still feels quite raw.  I know it's healed over as there's quite a bit of scar tissue there as I can see it on the nasoendoscopy video and it causes a nuisance when I swallow.  I think it's just ultra sensitive after surgery and rt.
