Hi everyone

after a very few traumatic months & then the Covid vacation putting my boyfriend into hospital with a very bad reaction due to the radiation having a nasty side effect & we nearly lost him as all his organs started to shut down, so scary. Bloody Covid!!
my question is as I can’t seem to get a straight answer from the medical team, how long after radiation& chemo therapy is it safe to have an alcoholic drink?

no that he’s desperate to have a drink at all but he quite fancies having half a shandy Joy

I hope everyone else is doing ok, I’ve been so grateful for this forum, a missive thanks to you all.

  • That sounds like a really tough time you've both had, sorry to hear it. it's hard enough without any complicaions!

As for alcohol, I really don't remember being given any significant guidance one way or the other, maybe my team were remiss and should've spoken to me about it, be interested to hear what others have to say. Personally I just went back to having a drink when I felt able to, couldn't do fizz or the acidity of wine so my first tipple was Guinness, though obviously in moderation.

  • Oh my, what a tough time, hope all getting better now. My Mac nurse said the odd 1 or 2 during treatment was ok, but she would tell me off if it ever meant my body went haywire, it never did. About 3 weeks in I couldn't drink wine for around 3 weeks when everything was metally but, celebrated my last radio by going to the seaside for a glass. But then, I also asked if I could take probiotics throughout my treatment and got met with no response (we will ask) and never an answer !  I know that is a little sitting on a fence of an answer but, it felt right for me to do at the time I am just over a year and a half post. Hope the shandy is enjoyed whenever he feels the time is right.

  • Hi Redrum......crikey what a terribly frightening time for you both. I was in hospital getting rehydrated and an NG tube put in when a lady came in with neutropenic sepsis from chemotherapy and they had to fight blooming hard for her. I'm so glad he has recovered well enough to fancy a drink. I got no guidance apart from don't drink during therapy. I had a beer 12 weeks after ending treatment and it was marvellous Slight smile

  • I don't remember alcohol being mentioned at all,  not that I fancied any during treatment or for weeks afterwards.  Like Mike, I couldn't cope with fizz or the acidity of wine.

It's great that your boyfriend is feeling well enough to fancy a shandy.  If it were me, I'd definitely go for it.

So pleased you got through what sounds like a very frightening time.

    All the best.

  • Good evening Redrum, sorry to hear about your boyfriend , yes covid has certainly left an impact, so pleased he is on the mend now, as Linda said drinking alcohol was never mentioned, i carried on as normal but changed from lager or fizzy beers and now drink real ales or Guinness as Dani mentioned. I think he has earned his shandy, enjoy. All the best.
