How long diagnosis?

Hi all. My husband had a tube down his throat on 12th May & had biopsies taken, also biopsies taken at the base of his tongue as an MRI showed it was asymmetrical.

On Friday he rang the ENT department & spoke to the secretary who said his results had just come in & she was emailing them to the consultant but he wasn't in until Monday.

We waited all day yesterday & today for a phone call but none came. Can we take this as a good sign as surely if the biopsies showed cancer the consultant would have contacted Dave by now? Or am I being naive?

  • Hello Tris, sorry you are left hanging, waiting is the worst. Covid may have changed things but in my experience all news/test results were delivered face to face whether good or not so good, nothing ever came down the phone. Probable you'll have to wait for an appointment I think but should happen quickly now, wish you both all the best.

Hi, thanks for the reply. The reason we thought Dave would get his diagnosis by phone is because due to Covid his appointments (apart from the mri & biopsies) have all been done over the phone. When he came home after his procedure he wasn't told how he would be told the results. The discharge letter just said results would be emailed to the consultant,

  • Hi Tris

I first saw my consultant in October 20 and after many tests and biopsies was diagnosed in December (they kept testing due to inconclusive results). It always took a couple of weeks for me to get my results because when the consultant received them she case conferenced with colleagues and they only met once a week.

It feels like a very long time while you are anxiously waiting doesn’t it. I was given diagnosis by phone on Christmas Eve!!

Good luck with the results, hope you find out very soon so that you know what you are facing (or not!!)

     Thanks

    Michelle

  • Hi Tris

As others have said although results may be in they usually get reviewed by a multi disciplinary team who meet usually once a week dk maybe that’s the delay.

    The waiting is the worst

  • Hi Tris, i agree with MikeO, all my results were face to face mainly so they can explain what they have or not found, i know the waiting is a pain but if you don't here by Thursday then I would phone his secretary and see what is happening about your next appointment reference the results, sometimes they need a gentle nudge Slight smile. All the best to you and Dave, take care.

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to reply. We (I) need to be a bit more patient! We'll do as suggested & wait till the end of the week.

           Cheers everyone,

  • Hi Tris

If your husbands results have been delivered to his consultant only yesterday they have to be discussed at a meeting of all the clinicians in the department. This might include surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, dental surgeons and support nursing staff. These meeting s are called MDTs or multidisciplinary meetings and usually happen only once a week so that is probably the delay.

If you have time have a look at the Swallows Charity. They are running a series of podcasts on diagnosis and they explain delays very well.

And good luck. Let us know how you get on.
