With my PEG insertion being aborted today, see my previous PEG thread, I have been referred to have a Radiologically Inserted Gastronomy (RIG), can anyone offer any advice or experience with this procedure please?

  • Hi Bawbee, it works in the same way as the PEG it's just the way they fit it, the RIG I believe is fitted externally using x-rays while the PEG involves having a camera guiding the tube down the throat into the stomach. The PEG is quicker to fit and does not require stitches to hold it in position. I'm not why they have changed yours unless it's something to do with your swallowing, I myself have a PEG so I know more about that than the RIG fitting procedure but they both do the same job. All the best with the fitting of the RIG, take care.

  • Hi Chris,

They couldn’t complete the procedure today as they could not locate the endoscope light to position the entry. See my earlier post regarding a PEG.

  • Hi Bawbee

We all understand the frustrations of when a procedure does not go to plan, especially when we mentally prepare for them.  I  had my feeding tube inserted through the stomach externally, so I am presuming it was a RIG not PEG on what has been written.  This was 12 years ago so I don't know if what I write is outdated. If my memory serves me correctly I had local anesthetic on the insertion site and the tube inserted.  This was with the the guidance of a X-ray screen monitor by the medical person doing the procedure.  I was already an impatient in hospital so I had cannulas and NG tube insitu. I remember it being very straight forward for me. The same night in a bit of discomfort sort of like wind pain.  Then obviously a little tender for a bit until things settled.  I did not have any problems with it, I just had to be aware how I moved with this in place. I had stitches for this and the district nurse came around my house and removed them when they needed taking out.  The others will be able to help more with questions when you have feeding tube in place, as it was so long ago for me. As no one has replied to having a RIG I thought maybe what I write is some help.

    Best wishes

    Nicky

  • That’s excellent, thank you Nicky Grinning

  • Great description Nicky, thanks for explaining in more detail, you are like me when i had a PEG fitted 12 years ago rather than the RIG. All the best.
