Hi All

sorry I just have so many questions & although my partners  cancer team is looking after him very well, due to Covid I can’t go with him and he now finds it too painful to speak so communicating with others is tricky.

I guess I am asking that currently as it’s too painful to speak due to the lining of his throat falling off, when he starts to heal, will he be able to speak again? Or will he have lost the use of his vocal chords. I don’t know if I’ve put this question very & im a bit scared too.

thanks Lu x

  • Hi Lu

Yes.  Once everything begins to repair itself your partner should be able to speak again.  If he has any problems the Speech and Language Team should be on hand to help.

Do remember you could speak to his Clinical Nurse on his behalf.

    Thanks Linda

Normally I write some questions down for my partner to take in but I didn’t feel I could with that one as it kept upsetting me. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply I really appreciate it. It’s all just so out of the blue & some days I’m still processing it all.

  • It's a lot to take in Lu so any questions just ask away.  We've  been through it and know how difficult it can be.

Your partner may find his voice is a little weaker or deeper for a while, especially if he's tired,  but any problems ask to be referred to Speech and Language.

  • Hi Redrum, yes I'm sure his voice will come back, when his throat starts to heal. I lost my voice for a few weeks after my treatment, my wife was so used to me not speaking, one night I said something and it really made her jump.

Hi Trev, thanks for that, happy that your voice back, how long did it take?

  • Hi Lu

I lost my voice about week five of treatment, i could speak (with effort) again by about week 6 after treatment but it was more a croak. By week 12 i could speak normally without discomfort

  • Hi Lu , i agree with the others that his voice will come back, slowly but surely , try to get him to write things down rather than talk , its suprising how well the skin heals back up again , best wishes for your partners recovery, take care.
