Removal of lymph nodes - have any of you not had this done?

Hi there

I've just been reading about how others on here have had neck dissections.

The initial indicator of my cancer was a swollen lymph node in my neck.

The biopsy of this lymph node came back with metastatic fluid which lead to a PET scan which confirmed this.  The primary tumour could not be see in the PET scan so I had an op to remove my tonsils and take samples from my tongue and the primary tumour was found in the left side of my tongue.

My reason for posting is that my surgeon and oncologist decided not to remove this lymph node and treat it with (35 doses of) radiotherapy and 2 of chemo.

I questioned the oncologist on this several times and each time he said that they had found that it was better to destroy the metastic fluid (is this actually classed as cancer ?) with radiotherapy, as removal of the lymph node can be problematic - he did say it was very close to my carotid artery.

I finished treatment last Monday and the lump/swollen lymph node has shrunk right down, which is positive.  But I am concerned that it seems 'normal' practice for many on here to have these nodes and surrounding ones removed.

I wonder if any of you here have not had this, like me ?

Thank you

Sasha

  • Yes - I was told to massage my neck but wasn't doing it the way you showed in your video.  I've just been having phone calls so I guess its more difficult to get that across.

    Hi,
Im another that didnt have swollen lymph node  removed. In my case it was still very swollen after treatment but gradually went down and has been ever since.

  • Thats good, its such a relief when they shrink.

  • I am waiting to find out. Scans next week and MT the following Tuesday.  There is no indication that it is not treatable.

  • Hi Peter

The waiting is the worst thing and then trying to get your head about 'what next'. It's really good news that it is treatable though.

    Wishing you all the best.

Hi Sasha, I was diagnosed with SCC in my lymph node but with Unknown Primary in June last year.  I underwent  30 sessions of RT and 2 of Chemo but did not have my lymph node removed. My 12 week post treatment PET scan showed that there is now no abnormality in the area treated or anywhere else. Surgery to remove the lymph node was never raised but I have thought that at least it’s an option should I suffer with this again.

  • Hi Sasha I've just joined this forum do im looking through posts. I had a sentinel node biopsy & 3 nodes came back positive.  My surgeon said there was no evidence that a doing a neck clearance pre radiotherapy was beneficial.  I had 30 doses radiotherapy & 2 doses of chemo. I'm 2.5 years post treatment & all is still clear.

  • All this sounds like my husbands story had lumps and lymph nodes removed they couldn't find the primary after 18months he noticed changes he pushed and pushed for an mri camera down throat showed noPensiveing first scan showed nothing ct showed nothing then biopsy showed cancer this all took from may last yr had surgery 4weeks ago ..they thought they were removing a 17mm growth from the scan once surPensiveon was in there he saw a 70mm growth ..but he couldnt get clear margins around it without compromising the tongue ..my husband is so scared it will grow back like before surgeon cant guarantee it Pensive weird how others have said their primary not seen on a scan

  • Hi Sasha , I have/had   base of tongue cancer which apparently spread to both lymph nodes in my neck. There was no mention of surgery but 30 rounds of RT and 6 chemo but I only manage 4 chemo as ill. All the best Regards Min
