Decision time and I want to do the best I can, after seeing most of the people today

I have to make the choice of having a peg or rig fitted next week , doctor has flagged up some issue . The Dietician has said that most people have them fitted but 25% dont . Thats a large percentage that dont . I know it can be gruelling but I just have to deal with it . I am not bothered about the food tasting bad. I suppose I am more concerned about how this treatment is going to affect me. I am having 6 chemo every monday along with the  30 radiotherapy and   The Doctor said I won't be able to work as its going to affect me.  I am thinking to do my treatments and then I have the rest of the day to deal with  sleeping ,eating and drinking. I know others here have been there and  done it and suppose I just want their valued opinions , Sorry for the long post Many Thanks Min

  • The reason i have advised to having a PEG is not because of looks it's because i hear of so many people struggling with their swallowing because they were not offered a PEG, i have had 3 operations radio and chemo and have always had a PEG. Please don't stress yourself over this as it's your choice and don't feel I'm telling you what to do, you will get there either way. Good luck and i hope all goes well, take care.

  • It is hard to know what to advise as no-one knows how poorly your mouth will get

Personally I was dead against having one because I hated the idea, and the thought made me queasy

But I did lose a fair bit of weight as a result and I had three or four quite rough weeks.. where each fortisip took me 45 mins to get down.

However my team made it clear a tube would be available if they felt I was losing too much weight or I was becoming dehydrated. I had one ropey week where I think the consultant considered ...strongly recommending a tube

  • Thanks Chris and Trev good advice as usual. I suppose it is one less thing to worry about especially if one is feeling unwell. I was dead set against it and thought what the hell I will get through it , As my partner said at least  its there if needed. Got a few appointments this week and a kidney function test next week , which seems odd as they said they would try and start treatment next week Regards Min

  • Hi Minmax

Can I ask what you decided on - I am in the exact same boat now and not sure what to do.  Due to start treatment in a few weeks been given info to go away with and decide.  I have been told I will probably need some help as getting radiotherapy to both sides of neck (also having 6 chemo).

    Thanks

  • Hi Sue and welcome to our little community. It’s a fraught time, this period between diagnosis and start of treatment. I wasn’t offered a stomach tube but had a nasogastric tube when I needed it. It was a life saver. I’m glad I didn’t have the worry of hospital admission for surgery and having to look after the PEG.
When the tube had done its work I just took it out. It was in use for 8 weeks
Just a personal opinion of course.
Some people  have hardly needed their tube at all.
