Just curious. 13 wks post chemorx SCC BOT. 7 Mnth temp trachie.

Developed swelling about six weeks ago proximal and right to thyroid region which initially seemed soft tissue. Now however has become hard, increasingly troublesome, inflamed red with almost constant bruisey pain.

If oedema lymphedema, any tips for relief or to avoid getting worse whilst waiting to be seen?

Thank you vm . Slight smile

  • Hi Ffi

Gentle stroking towards lymph nodes that are functional sorts  lymphodema if you persist but I wouldn’t be massaging any area that is swollen and painful. Can you contact your specialist nurse so that somebody can look at you fairly soon?
There’s obviously some inflammation there which needs attention first.

  • Thanks Dani. Have had a little read but to be honest I don't really know where thoses nodes may be (hehe) . Have been trying to manipulate a little for a while with gentle outward strokes but doesn't seem to have any effect.

Have an appointment at Lymphodema  clinic next week now. Emailed my contact nurse about it a month ago, that I suspected lymphodema, as I hadn't had a reply for over three weeks I assumed it wasn't of any concern. Reminded her last week, again via email, as it obviously wasn't going away but worsening. She said the reason she hadn't replied was because the Lymphodema clinic was still closed due to covid.

As say I do have an appointment to attend now. So they are back up and running it seems. Can't wait really as it is a literal constant pain in the neck. Joy (how many times have you guys heard that one?)

Have had a look in an old book of herbs and potions but naught. (did I mention I was a witch? :) )

Was imagining/hoping for some kind of magic poultice or similar lol.

Thanks very much for your time to reply Dani.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Fi. I agree with Dani - although it’s the right timeframe for lymphoedema, I’ve not heard of it being painful or even tender before. I would encourage you to contact your Specialist nurse today and ask to be examined, or at least send them a photo. If it isn’t Lymphoedema the Lymphoedema nurse won’t know what it is and you will then wait to be seen......

The H&N teams are usually really happy to check out something like this quickly, and then you can move on with appropriate treatment, rather than guessing and hoping. Sorry it’s tender/red, but best to get advice asap, and if it’s Lymphoedema you will have the joys of self-massage for weeks to come!

    Good luck

  • Thank you for your input and advice Hilary. I will now be seen this week.

I suspect the actual trachie and band may play a role in creating pressure above this point, particularly when resting /sleeping.

My post treatment scan is sheduled for week commencing Nov 9th. Not had a date yet though. If it goes ahead then it will be 17 weeks post treatment. Rather longer than what I was led to believe.

Have yesterday resolved to a little Oramorph again, which is not what I had wanted but it helps for now.

Shall get it all sorted I'm sure.

Thanks once again. The support on here is hugely appreciated.

  • Hi Ffi. Don’t worry about the timing of the scan. I had mine at 16 weeks and a few health boards are moving that way to avoid the false positives at 12.
    Best of luck
