Hi All,

I am new to this forum and posting in relation to my 73 year old Dad. He had surgery 2 years ago to remove a cancerous tumour in the roof of his mouth, unfortunately earlier this year his cancer came back and he will now need to have surgery to remove part of his cheek bone (also skin grafts to re-bulk the roof of his mouth). He will unfortunately lose his eye due to the cancer being so close to his eye socket. This op would have taken place earlier in the year but due to the pandemic he initially had 6 weeks of radiotherapy. The op will now go ahead in the next few weeks and he has chosen to have a skin graft over the eye socket.

My Dad is keeping positive but has said that he would like to hear from or speak to anyone who has had similar surgery/experience and how they have coped post surgery.  He has always been an incredibly active man (still riding horses until last year!) and is focused on getting back to being as active as possible.

I would be so grateful for any advice.

Thanks in advance.

Christine

  • Hello

I have no words or experience to help, but just hope someone on this forum can. Wishing you all the very best,

  • Good evening Christine, so sorry to hear about your dads' problems and the cancer returning, my first cancer was the other the other way around being the floor of the mouth so did not affect the eye, i had skin grafts to build up and repair the hole in the floor of the mouth. Another operation i had was to reconstruct my lower jaw in my second cancer using skin and muscle etc to help build the area up. I know it in a different area but it has similar treatments involved. All my surgery turned out ok and its been 11 years since my last operation, I'm sorry i cannot offer more precise advice, and it's mainly to show that these sort of surgeries can be done and to give you and your Dad some encouragement that the end results are possible. Wishing you and your Dad all the best, please re-post if you want help, advice, or just a chat and we will try to help. Take care.

Hi Chris, thank you so much for your reply, this really is so encouraging to hear. I’m so pleased to hear that you are clear, and you are right, it’s all similar surgery. My Dad will also have skin and muscle taken to re-build the cheek and roof of his mouth. Again it’s so encouraging to hear your experience, the surgery for this kind of thing seems so complex yet it’s great to know that they are successful.

    Thanks again

  • No worries Christine, yes it all sounds similar but in a different area, you are right it sounds complex but the skill of the surgeons is amazing and will do their best to get a good result/outcome. Keep us updated on his progress, all the best ,take care
