Hi everyone Lisa my Macmillan nurse has asked me to post on the forum.
I have had a stressful 24 hours ,my last face to face appointment was February with one of my ent Cancer consultants ,it’s rare i get scoped as my primary was in my tonsil area they yank my tongue and using a mirror see what’s needed. So fast forward to next appointment late May would I accept a phone call of course I would. So spoke to consultants who had been with me from the biopsy onwards. July I had another phone this time a totally different consultant.
what I didn’t know was I had been taken off the cancer pathway and sent to e n t ,it was a strange call from consultant in his words he didn’t know why he was ringing me.Maybe alarm bells should have rung .Fast forward to Septembers I rang appointments to be told they had not received anything and ring back next month .I rang yesterday to be told rudely I may add I was a general ent patient and no general routine en t appointments were being made l I tried to explain I was a cancer patient in remission 2 years of a 5 year plan.By this time tears had started so she curtly told me to sit down make a cup of tea and she would escalate to ent and someone would ring me.As you can guess no one rang , but I emailed my Macmillan nurses and this morning received a tearful phone call from her expressing her gratitude to my email as they are aware of what’s happening but until someone put it in writing they had no ammunition to take to hospital board I will add this is not the cancer hospital it’s my local hospital.
So please do not be fobbed off cancer follow up,clinics are being held and the consultants do want to see us it’s the bean counters who seems to be the stumbling blocks.Accept one phone call but insist on face to face at next one .
My case and others at my trust has now been escalated to board level and P A L S have been involved I was asked permission for my email,to be used which I readily gave.
so remember we on a 5 year plan.

Hi Hazel
Sorry to hear what you've had to go through - most upsetting. By coincidence I received a phone call this morning. After some discussion it transpires I too have slipped off the radar. Havn't had a check up face to face since the beginning of the year and only one phone call from a consultant back in June. No further appts had been made for me either for a phone call or face to face and if it hadn't been for the call today I wouldn't have received any further appts. Not sure if this was due to bean counters or an admin slip up! Due to my vocal difficulties (it's really problematic trying to speak on the phone) and other problems they're going to try to get a face to face appt, all depending on what happens of course with Covid.
Well done for fighting your corner and hope you get your face to face appt.

Hi Hazel
Thanks fort posting this here.
This is happening to lots of people and many don’t have the wherewithal to raise the issue or complain.
Thank heavens you could fight your corner. While you’re here ( and anybody reading this thread) post a comment on Macmillan’s wall in their campaign on the forgotten C.
Every bit helps

I had a face to face check up on Tuesday with the full works tube up nose etc, this is the first one since January, with two phone calls in between. This is terrible that people are being overlooked, as I think these check ups are really reassuring. hope you can get something sorted out, and get a face to face check up.
Thank you Linda, my Macmillan nurse says I will if not this time,it will be be before end of year as they don’t want me to go over a year without being seen.My trust are using one if the smaller hospitals as a covid free zone or at least as covid free as they can no patients are there.I will report back and also the findings of the p a l s investigation.Hooe you get back in track as well.

That is appalling treatment and you have done exactly the right thing by raising it. Having spent 20 years working in and around the NHS system I never hesitate to formally complain if I see something going wrong. I know the system so it is relatively easy for me to find back doors to use. However, so many don't and are vulnerable so a formal complaint when I see a process that is wrong makes the organisation take stock and put it right for others.
Well done on fighting your corner and, please, everyone else do the same so the "system" does not let us down; especially with the Covid excuse!
Hi Peter. Thank you I can’t tell you how upset I was to be told I had been taken off the cancer clinics and downgraded to general ENT.Our daughter works within the NHS in governance protocol she says the same if we the patients don’t complain they can’t do anything about it. I had another phone call yesterday from p a l s they asked for formal permission to investigate via the trust board and governance,so watch this space. How are you ? Are you still on a watch and wait protocol ?

Well I have an oncologist appointment next Thursday. I haven't had a scope since January and I'm not quite at two years yet. They better get me in or I'll wave Hazel at them
