MRI

I often (well  not too often) have this to my head. It takes about twenty minutes which is quite a long time for my head to be held in a kind of prison. It is also hard to lie flat for this length of time. There is a mirror on me which makes a person able to watch me and I can see him all through this time. I have often asked for a clock to be visible as well. So at least I can keep check of the time. So far my request has  never been granted. It is a very little thing to do, although they do give you a walkie talkie, where they can speak to you. Is there any reason why a simple thing like a clock cant be there.

  • Maybe there is no such thing as a clock without magnetic metal parts?

  • I counted on my hands using fingers as minutes. It did actually take my mind off it.

  • It is all to do with the high magnetic fields...

I did find on my PET/CT scanner a digital display that I finally figured out gave a countdown timer and all sorts of interesting information to an (ex) physics student!  Maybe there is something similar on the MRI?

  • There is a clock hanging up in the room I can see it from where I am lying in the MRI, It is just not facing me. So I cant read it. I told them just to hang it up in a place that I can see it. It is very difficult for them to do anything without permission from the top even such a simple thing. I must mention that this also applies to radiation.

  • Have they never offered to play music for you?  I am very claustrophobic but I did find it easier with eyes shut listening to my music, time seemed to pass quickly

  • That sounds good. I’ve had two and nobody ever mentioned it. All I got was bang bang bang clatter thump for half an hour

  • Yes it’s much better.  Plus you can check how long each song is and then you know when your almost finished. Plus it’s better than the constant banging too. Make sure you ask about it before your next scan.

  • I hope I don’t need one. My first was a nightmare. 13 pokes at my veins before somebody had the sense to get an anaesthetist who got in first try. Next time I was well hydrated. You live and learn. Xx

  • Hi Dani, that's all i got was bang bang and the occasional clatter, although i did not mind as the experience was ok. Best wishes.
