I am six weeks post treatment after 30 fractions of RT and two chemo for squamous cell cancer in left tonsil and spread to left neck lymphs.  Only pain relief is paracetamol every four hours. Still very sore and swallowing is painful.  May I ask how long it’s taken folks for the throat pain to abate?

  • Hi, JoMar, it's good you have finished your treatment and now you can recover. Everyone is differant as far as the pain goes, some people have more pain and soreness than others, and the time it lasts varies also. You are still very early days after treatment, you could ask your team for some other pain relief, in the mean time keep taking the paracetamol. Let your body heal it's self, you will get there. All the very best to you.

Thank you Ray. In truth there’s a little bit of me that wants to think ‘only a few more weeks and the pain will be gone’!!!  Nevertheless I am truly grateful for the physical and mental progress I’ve already made and just so thankful to have moved forward from the lowest point I did reach.

  • Hi Jo

i was on Morphine till 12 weeks then my oncologist gave me a good talking to and said I should have been well off it by then. To tell you the truth I just hadn’t tried and the weeks ran away with me. A week later I had stopped and could manage most soft food with minor discomfort.  I gather you can’t take morphine but at least it gives you an indication of a time frame.
6 weeks is early days especially if you have had chemotherapy as well. The combination always has worse side effects.
20 months out of RT My throat is still prone to niggles and irritation but it gets better all the time.
Patience ( what a stupid word in this instance) but it will come.

  • Hi JoMar

Are you able to take liquid Ibuprofen as well as the paracetamol?

  • Also, have you tried any medications to help anaesthetise your throat before eating?

I was advised against it due to duodenum damage. I’m going to check this with the oncology team when I see them on Monday.

I don’t currently have any anaesthetic products - another one to ask my team about next week.
At the moment I’m entirely PEG tube sustained, think it may need to stay that way for quite some while!

  • Hi Jo

You are a few weeks further along than me (almost exactly the same condition however)

As mentioned everyone seems to heal at differing rates but i would read the blogs on here to get an idea?

Got to say i am amazed you are managing on just paracetamol!

I am 2.5 weeks post treatment and i am on morphine, but even when i have taken the morphine it takes me an hour to get down two fortisips and a glass of milk/water!!

Have you tried difflam? its a local NSAID, i wont lie - it does sting like heck when i put it on, but it does help when the stinging stops

    Hi JoMar

Same here, 30 RT and 2 chemo, mine ended end of march this year, I started feeling better by july, even then had this ulcer under my tongue which would not go away! It was gone by august. April, May and June were a complete write off, even July was a write off too, thinking back, I think my body got so used to paracetamol, not sure if it was helping or not. Pain will be there for a while, but believe me, there will be a day when you wake up and you'll feel great! No pain! I thought that day would never come for me but it did, one day I woke up and had no pain, couldn't believe it! Still took paracetamol for few weeks after that to make sure, now been off all meds for over a month! Even more than that! I do however take vitamin D, got it off amazon, think it helped with immune system, which helped things heal. Try some gelclair if you can get some, it'll sooth things down inside your mouth. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions

    Best wishes
