I’ve just been diagnosed with mouth cancer and am awaiting MRI and CT scan to give a clearer picture. I know I need surgery but don’t know what else as yet.
im really confused/scared and hope you may help with some of my concerns. Will I need reconstruction on my tongue, what other treatment may I need, will I be able to talk again ?
Hi Mark. It all depends where your cancer is
There are reconstruction regimes
Other therapies include chemotherapy and radiotherapy or both.
I hope you get good results and when you have more info pop back and there will be somebody to help.

Good evening Mark71, sorry to hear of your diagnosis, please try not to be scared as mouth cancer is very treatable these days with excellent recovery rates. Its early days at the moment and a lot depend on the whereabouts the tumour is, reconstruction is not normally needed but again depending on the area if its the tongue or any bone that's been affected then reconstruction will be needed but this will all become clearer once the scans are done. Unless you have cancer of the Larynx( voice box) or the tongue then your speech will not be affected. In some cases radiotherapy or chemotherapy will be offered after the operation, again depending on where the cancer is. So at the moment its a case of waiting for the results of the scans so they can tell you a definite plan of attack. Please try and avoid using google as the information can be very misleading, we will try our best on here to give you better advice once you get a better idea, all the best, take care.

Hi Mark,Yiuve made the first step by getting diagnosed then coming in here. Best advise keep off Dr Google stick to recognised sites like this one. Lots if us have been through treatment and come out the other side. Once you’ve got mri and scan done things fall into place, If yiu click profile pictures yiu will get links to my blog and others when you are ready to read them I am 2 years post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes and living my life to the max.
its a stressful period but treatment is doable, like Chris explains depends where cancer is exactly but in my case I can still talk for England

Hi Mark
Welcome to the forum.
Most of us can relate to your anxiety and fear of a cancer diagnosis and the mind goes into a whirlwind of imaginings. Once you have your scan results and discussed a treatment plan things should become much clearer.
There are many of us here who have received various treatments for head and neck cancer so plenty of support and advice when you need it.
All the best.
