Hi all.
My Hubble has just finished radiotherapy on his tonsil. He is really struggling and so am I. As soon as his throat hurt he stopped eating 3 weeks into Treatment and had to be admitted to hospital for 10 days on a refeed programme. He is now home with a feeding tube but I am constantly battling with him. He is not ingesting nearly enough food - he keeps turning the machine off and is not hydrating either unless it is to take painkillers. I appreciate what he is going through is tough but how can I get through to him that he needs nutrition and hydration to heal? Thank you
Hi Tets
this is Hazel I am 21 month post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes so I do know what he isn’t going through and to an extent what you are going through. Once you’ve left the bubble of the daily visits to hospital even in normal times you are left to fend for yourself it was like that pre corona virus to a certain extent . I too had a feeding tube from week 3 into treatment and for the do,owing 3 weeks afterwards. To give yiu some hope I have written a blog detailing my experiences along with links to several others. I am afraid to say he may need some tough love food and hydration are the only way he will recover try and get him to take smaller feeds it could be his tummy has shrunk so much it won’t take the food and that’s why he’s turning it off, I use different to stand up to feed some times and take smaller amounts overs longer periods the tube along wit. Suggest a spreadsheet needs at least 3 litres of water a day plus 2000 calories. It’s nit easy but at the moment his body is still fully of radiation and it needs flushing out. so yiu have access to a Macmillan CNS nurse if so maybe give them a call as well , There’s is an article by Dr Peter Harvey link on my blog which gives an excellent description of what happens after treatment finishes it’s worth a read.Is he using mouthwashes and gargling ,difflam is good for sore throats .
hope this helps there’s lots if us in here who have been there and done it it’s nit easy but there is light at the end if the tunnel.Posituve mental attitude is what git me through it , along with several arguments with my hubby and we never argue but he like you struggled with me nit being able to eat . Have you tried poached eggs ? Good source of protein and slips down quite easily ..Just a thought has he got oral thrush ? This isn’t quite common at the stage he is at now , white patches inside mouth really hinders progress .

Thank you so much. He cant eat or drink anything orally atm everything by tube. He is gagging all the time with mucus too. We have just had another chat regarding having nutrition but he says breathing is more important.
I might ring the hospital tomorrow as our next appointment is not until 11th. He knows what he should have in terms of hydration etc he just refuses. Thank you will loook at your blog x
Hi Tets I was given Carbusistine to help thin the mucus as for that if you can also I found salsa water gently drunk helped with the mucus it sort if eased through the mucus .Also gargle withwarm salt water and if he can stand it bi carbonate of soda . So you have a humidifier for bedroom at night ? Plus a nebuliser I used nebuliser uo to 6 times a day , you can use plain boiled tap water in it yiu don’t need to use saline . I was going through a box of tissues a day just spitting the gunk out .If it’s any help it goes as quickly as it came , often
replaces with dry mouth which I still have to some extent..but that can be managed with sugar free gum water and at night xyimelts which you can buy online..
good luck it is crap no other word for it try and keep him hydrated via the tube we used to put warm tea with honey in mine just to get a little but extra calories in.
Yes ring tomorrow

Men!
Funny how women are better at this sort of thing we know how to take doctors instructions by and large
Hazel has said it all really.
I hope you get somewhere.

Hi Tets
hope it helps ,another thing I found that helped was sleeping on my own yes first time in 40 years marriage separate bedrooms plus sleeping on many more pillows than usual .If you don’t have a nebuliser you can always used good old fashioned head over bowl if hit water and towel over head don’t put any oils in that or in humidifier though .
You will get there

Hi Hazel, I have tried to get to your blog a couple of times and the address in your posts doesn’t seem to work for me. Maybe it’s a comma that’s wrong. Can you confirm what link is please.
