It started about week 3 of 7 of radiotherapy. Radiotherapy ended 17 days ago.

I have carbocisteine, I have my nebuliser, and I have various mouth rinses and potions, but I just want to know when the mucous is likely to end.

  • Hi Louisa

i was around 4/5 weeks when ine day it just went as quickly as it came .Youve for everything including carbusistine so can’t suggest anything else apart from keep up drinking aim for at least 2 litres of water a day hydration and nutrition is key to recovery .

good luck and there is light at the end of the tunnel

  • Hazel, do you mean drinking via your mouth, i.e. normal drinking? I’m averaging a quarter of a box of tissues per sip of sugar-free black currant juice. Just can’t clear the mucous long enough to get the juice down. Now mid-week three after radiation.

  • Horrid mucous.
As for drinking it doesn’t matter whether you drink it or add it via tube as long as you are super hydrated

I would aim for at least three litres.

  • Thanks, Dani,

Sorry I haven’t got the hang of tagging people on this site.

I pumped two and a half litres into my PEG this morning because I thought I had a UTI (stinky wee), then happily discovered it’s not an infection, but simply dehydration.

Interestingly the dieticians said I should have an extra litre of water on top of my Ensure feeds, but a I am sure you are right and will now continue with the 3 litres + feeds.

    So grateful to you, Dani,

    Louisa

  • Hi Louisa sorry didn’t see message been out on cycle s most of day then decorating. Yes normal life will resume although you might not think it. Can’t really add to Dani s post just get the hydration any way you can oral or via peg. Even now I drink at least 2 litres of water a day. Just watch the sugar free juice it could dry your mouth out similar tea and coffee is dehydrating. You are doing really well kept it up

  • Hi Louisa ()

This horrible sticky, stringy mucous phase lasted 3-4 weeks for my hubby.

The nights were awful and he slept sitting up with a v shaped pillow.

But it went as quick as it came so there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

However it was replaced with a very dry mouth but at least there’s stuff you can get to help with that.

I hope it goes away soon for you.

  • Thanks, Sharon,

After a night waking regularly to puke/spit into my bedside bucket, followed by half an hour bringing up another gallon or so of mucus this morning, my husband has cheered me up by bringing me a haul of lemon scented kitchen roll from Aldi! #thelittlethings Relaxed️LemonLemon
