How can I ease the ringing in my ears??

Hi KSM. The only cause I know of for ringing in the ears on this site, would be due to cisplatin chemo. Tinnitus is a not uncommon side-effect of the drug. You need to tell your team and they will consider whether to continue with more cisplatin or whether they need to change you to another drug. I have tinnitus from my third and final chemo -had it for over 18 months without any change and I don;t expect it to ever go. I live with it. Maybe others know of another cause for ringing, but don’t omit to tell your consultant before the next chemo is due - sometimes some hearing loss goes alongside the tinnitus so if you don;t mention the tinnitus and they give you more cisplatin you risk permanent hearing loss. Sorry that’s not overly encouraging just the facts as I know them. But some peoples  tinnitus goes away.....

Good luck for the rest of treatment

    Hilary

  • KSM I'm sorry but I have to agree with Hilary, it's a side effect of Cisplatin and I really don't know how it can be taken away, though I've not investigated. I'm lucky in that although it's always there, more than five years down the line, I don't hear it unless I think about it; so I can now hear it very clearly but in two minutes or so I'll be oblivious again.

I'm sure there are things to be done if it's bothering you though, talk to your team.

Seven years on my partner still has tinnitus which gets worse if he’s tired or under the weather.  We found a sound therapy clinic via the web which has an office in Harley Street....I don’t think I’m allowed to name it.   It basically entailed six months of wearing hearing aids for up to six hours a day which play a variety of sounds at different frequencies which confuse the brain and divert attention from the tinnitus.  Upside....it seemed to work.  Downside.....expensive and I could hear the sounds too, as could others in the street or on a bus.   He now uses a hearing aid which has white noise in the background that diverts attention from the ringing which is still there but less obvious.  There are white noise apps you can download and play when you’re trying to get to sleep which divert attention from the ringing and other similar devices, and a meditation course too.  And take a look at tinnitus.org.uk
