  • Hi - I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in December 2021. After various scans I started FLOT in February - I had 4 treatments which were every two weeks. There were 3 drugs - 2 were administered on the chemo ward and the third was a 24 hour pump which a nurse visited to remove the following day. The side effects for me were mainly tiredness; sensitivity to cold (had to wear gloves to get something from the fridge; and constipation and diarrhoea. After 2 months of treatment I had a 6 week break before the operation. Then I had another course of FLOt about 6 weeks after the operation. I found that the side effects during the two week cycles were fairly consistent so I could almost predict when I would suffer each.
let me know if there is anything specific you want to know and I will do my best to answer.

  • Thank you so much  that was very helpful  x

  • Thank you. And good luck with your treatment.

  • Hi,

FLOT is pretty tough and there will be days after it when you won’t feel up to doing very much. When you can though, you should try to get out and do some exercise to keep your strength and fitness up. If the plan is for you to undergo surgery (you didn’t say if it is) then your suitability for this will very much depend on your fitness level as the surgery itself is pretty tough on the body. I was diagnosed in Oct ‘23, completed my FLOT in Jan ‘24, surgery 29th Feb. and finished post op FLOT in June ‘24. It’s a pretty tough journey but, with the right mindset and good support, you can get through it. It’s a long road to recovery and patience is important. The words “marathon not sprint” are frequently used. There is always plenty of good advice here as you go through it. Good luck to you.
