Hello Everyone

My name is Robin, and i live in Hereford. I was diagnosed with Oesophagus cancer at the end of August after having trouble swallowing Metformin tablets that i had been given for my type 2 diabetes. It was a real shock, but i am a very positive person. I had a CT scan that showed the cancer had not spread which was good. I also had a cardiogram which showed my heart was fine.

I then went to see a surgeon in Gloucester hospital regarding having an operation to remove the tumour which is 7cm long. The surgeon there said that he and his team decided that having an operation would be too much for me to deal with, and would only have a small chance of being successful. I then asked to be referred to The Royal Marsden Cancer hospital in London for a 2nd opinion. I had a consultation there 2 weeks ago, and the surgeon there said he was very confident of doing an operation to remove the tumour which was great news. I now have to go the hospital at Chelsea on Tuesday to do a pre operation fitness test, so things are looking more positive for me.

  • Hi Robin I'm in Tewkesbury and had my surgery in Gloucester Royal in September of 2024. What reason did they give you for not wanting to do the operation?

  • The surgeon said there would only be a small chance of it being successful, and it would take a year for me to recover from the operation.

  • Hello Robin

My husband was diagnosed as inoperable in 2008 but, after chemo and our efforts, the tumour virtually disappeared and the problem lymph nodes returned to normal.  There was a ream of three surgeons at the hospital but only one would operate, the other two thought it was too risky.  He had an oesophagectomy in 2009 and, despite a few relatively minor problems (& more unrelated surgery), he is here and well - he also has type 2 diabetes.

I was reliably informed that some surgeons will not take on certain patients because the outcome could affect their statistics, I was horrified, thank goodness there are some who put the patient first.

I’m so glad you got a second opinion and that things are looking positive, I hope the fitness test today goes well!

    Best wishes x

  • They said the tumour is too long and it would be too much for me to cope with

  • Its really good to hear the positive news regarding your husband. I saw an annaesthetic surgeon at The Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea yesterday who advised against having the tumour removed as there would only be a 20% chance of it working, but two weeks ago i saw a surgeon at The Royal Marsden hospital in Sutton who said he was confident of removing the tumour, so i have seen 2 surgeons in two weeks with two differing POI. I now have to see Mr Kumar at Sutton again on Dec 5th and see what he says after yesterday. I was diagnosed 3 months ago, and i feel absolutely fine which is the odd thing.
