Hi, thank you for letting me join this group, I’ve just had a lesion removed from my oesophagus which biopsy showed was cancer. The area around it was also removed. This was a total shock. I am due a follow up endoscopy in a couple of months time and have been told that further surgery may be needed then if there are any more cancer cells found. However, I’m really worried it’s spread. Should I be given a follow up scan to check it’s not gone anywhere else or is this normal practice to assume l’m cancer free? I was wondering if anyone else has had this. I know I should feel happy that it’s been removed but I just feel that I have this hanging over me for the next couple of months now. I’m trying to be positive and strong for everyone but feel I’ve been knocked off my feet.
Hi Teach, so glad to hear that they have removed the problem, however you are always described as in remission of cancer and never really clear but it’s just a way they described it, I had an endoscopy after my treatment completed but I had Chemo and Radiotherapy so obviously the Radiotherapists were keeping an eye on things but they never discuss the way the site is going, I never had a Scan for 3 months after and am still having 3 monthly even though both my cancers are in remission.
I do hope the endoscopy goes well for you and you will most likely have a scan at some stage but you can always ask you Clinical Team as they will know the procedure for your Hospital, it’s just all Teams have different approaches,
Hope this helps and I’m sure others will also add their experiences, Take care
Tony

Thank you for your reply. I’m still trying to process it all. It was such a shock.
Hi Yes unfortunately it does take a while for everything to sink in and also process, all I can suggest at this time as much as it seems not possibe just stay positive throughot thenext period.
Even I after my time I'm due for another 3 month scan tomorrow and each time for the waiting for the results is a time I get very mindful of the outcome
Let us know how things go we are all here to help and encourage as much as we can
