Chemotherapy after oesophagectomy

I’ve recently had an oesophagectomy and because 1 lymph node contained cancer I’m being advised to have chemotherapy but I’m not sure what to do. Has anybody been in a similar situation?

  • I was lucky in that my post-surgery pathology showed no signs of any cancer cells but, nonetheless, I elected to undergo post-op chemo (albeit at 70% strength). I wanted to make sure that I had thrown everything available at being cured of my cancer. Your decision of course but, in your situation, I wouldn’t even be thinking twice about it.

  • How you doing Cool Blue

  • Did you have any side effects from the chemo?

  • All my margins were clear and 18 lymph nodes were also clear so after discussion with my surgeon and oncologist I decided to decline the post op chemo but if there had been any sign of cancer at all I would have had it. I don’t know if I made the right decision time will tell ! I can honestly say there has been times when I thought I should have had it to complete the treatment but time will tell !

    Hope this helps !!

  • Hi Nic nac,

    I’m doing pretty good thanks  Occasional bouts of reflux and still get tired easily but getting on with life. How about yourself? CB

  • Hi,

    Side effects were much the same as pre-op;

    • fatigue
    • neuropathy
    • lack of appetite
    • tastebuds wrecked

    But none of them were permanent. I only had three post-op cycles and I was glad to be done with it, to get my tastebuds back (and my hair) and to continue my recovery from surgery.
