I am 18 months post op and I still have pain in my right side. It gets worse as the day goes on. Probably not what you wanted to hear but we are all different. I very rarely drink now but if I do it will be a glass of wine sipped very slowly.
Hi I had my op in Bristol 7mths ago ! 6 weeks is very early your side will be tender and painful for a while but I now have no pain. I can eat a lot more now than I used to will occasionally have alcohol but only with a meal ! Any questions happy to help were you at the BRI ?
Thank you for replying very good wishes to you both a very long road
I recovered well and when I went to see M r Byrne for my 3month check I was feeling really well and after discussing with him and the oncologist I decided to decline the post op chemo as all my margins were clear and 18 lymph nodes were clear l Have just had my seven month scan and awaiting results so we will see if I made the right decision. I have put a brief history on my profile but feel really lucky that I have come through feeling so well and could not fault the BRI. Hope you start to feel better soon just so grateful.
the most pain I had for a while was in the centre of my back if I did too much but that is very rare now ! Tricia
Thank you for your time in replying when did you find out about your margins was that t about 2 weeks after your op in the bri ?
No it was at my post op check which if I remember right it was about 6 weeks so you should be due yours soon ! Which surgeon did your surgery?
Hello. My husband is almost seven months post surgery also done at BRI. The pain you describe is very common and the time frame for improvement is different for everyone. Chris rarely has pain in that area now but developed considerable back pain caused by nerve damage from the surgery ….. again fairly common. The GP has prescribed alternative pain meds to help. We got histology results about three weeks post op which for my husband, we’re not so great. Margins were narrow and 12 of 34 nodes were positive for cancer. The FLOT chemo had shown little effect on the tumour and had made Chris extremely ill so it was decided there was little point in giving him more. He is generally doing well and can now eat most things in small amounts ….. avoids anything sweet early in the day. Progress is different for everyone but surgeons at BRI are good and the upper GI nurses are very helpful if you have questions. The fortisip drinks did not agree with Chris at all, too much sugar which caused dumping. We are using HUEL meal replacements to provide some extra calories. They are available in supermarkets.
I know it’s a tough journey but things really do get better ….. try to stay positive.
sending good wishes
Geraldine
