Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed in April with stage 2 oesophageal cancer which was a shock. Am shortly to embark on five weeks of weekly chemotherapy and daily radiotherapy. Then I am to have keyhole surgery followBlush by possible immunotherapy. I am very positive and am still working and leading life normally apart frim having to change what I eat. I am anxious about surgery as have never had surgery in my life let alone visited hospital! It is all very alien to me. I think I worry about what I will feel after surgery and getting back to normal. I am a fit 57 year old. Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Hi Outdoor Swimmer. I am just wondering whether you have Squamous Cell Cancer or Adenocarcinoma of the Oesophagus. I had SCC and underwent Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy for 11 weeks, followed by the operation 10 weeks later. I did not have any Immunotherapy. Like you I was pretty fit and had hardly visited the Doctor, never mind contemplating a hospital stay and a major operation. For me, my recovery from the operation was slow and steady. I was in hospital for 10 days and once home I got out every day for a walk to gradually build up my fitness. I followed the guidelines regarding eating, which meant very sloppy mushy foods to begin with, and gradually built up to more solid foods. I was really encouraged to chew very thoroughly, and to eat small amounts often, e.g. not 3 meals a day. I suffered with a lot of discomfort under my right boob and for ages (maybe approximately 10 weeks) I couldn’t stand wearing a bra. Maybe you won’t get the discomfort if you are having keyhole surgery? Fingers crossed for you. Despite this though I took a trip to Copenhagen at the end of January to visit my son which was about 3 months after the operation.
Obviously this is a short account and I wrote up my whole history once I was on the road to recovery, which you can read if you wish by clicking on my name.
I wish you all the very best over the coming months, and never be afraid to post and ask questions, as this forum is absolutely wonderful in providing support and advice. Take care, Julie
