Hi,
Wanted just to drop a line to say hello. I was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in early March at an endoscopy here in Cornwall. Since then, it’s been confirmed that it’s not spread and appears to be isolated. 3 cm in size.
I started FLOT a week ago and so far it’s been okay although some side-effects with fatigue, diarrhoea and aching bones from the Filgastrim injections which paracetamol seems to help with. Not feeling 100% but definitely not in a terrible way yet.
Still feeling pretty positive upstairs and living in a beautiful part of the world really helps. I look forward to going to know you all.
Kev
You certainly are in a beautiful part of the world!
Good luck with the chemo ….. my husband coped fairly well until the last round which wasn’t good. He is now two weeks post op. Best advice we had … gloves by the fridge if you have neuropathy and don’t go near the freezer. Take your temp with a good thermometer at least twice daily and call the cancer helpline promptly if you have a temp or worrying symptoms …. don’t wait and think it will go away. We found that out the hard way.

Hi Kev,
Your side effects are all pretty much par for the course with FLOT I’m afraid and likely to get more pronounced (especially the fatigue) as you move through the cycles (I presume you’re having 4?) Sorry about that. I presume you’ve been given a treatment plan? CB
Yes so it’s the regular four cycles of FLOT then the short break then surgery sometime towards the end of the summer. Really good to read your bio and see that you’re getting back to normal. It feels such a long journey ahead of me but as I’m sure you know, reading testimonies from people that have been through it is so comforting and helpful.
We always found them really helpful too. Be proactive with meds … use them promptly. My husband was inclined to try and soldier on which wasn’t good. Give in and rest/sleep whenever you need to. I hope it’s not too bad ….. everyone responds differently. My husband has managed it and has had surgery. His recovery so far is going well. The best advice he was given was to improve his fitness before the op and that has really helped.

Hi Kevin just to say hope you’re doing ok with the chemo ! I wasn’t to bad with the pre op chemo horrible mouth and tingling in my legs and hands but after the second cycle I was able to eat again so that was a plus !
I had surgery 6 weeks ago and now waiting to see about post op chemo ! Stay positive it’s the only way Tricia
My husband lost all taste in round 3 and had to force himself to eat. He was prescribed a variety of nutritional drinks if eating became a problem ….. do you have them on prescription? He was prescred Ondansetron for nausea but not sure that would be appropriate.

I know how you feel ….. there is so little you can do to make things better …… and I found I had to try not to fuss too much as that was counterproductive. Is a dietician involved? We had a regular call from the dietician soon after diagnosis ….. contact your upper GI / specialist nurses (if not already done) for advice and dietician involvement. There are a range of high calorie shakes etc that might help.
