I have recently been diagnosed with stage 3 adenocarcinoma of my oesophagus. No treatment plan in place as still having tests. I am very worried, I am by myself as my partnership ended very dramatically just before Christmas and I have struggled to cope with that. Not content with all of this I also have early stage breast cancer, I had the results at the end of February. So I feel unlucky. I was due for surgery at the end of March but at the 11th hour this was cancelled by the breast care team supposedly so the GI team could concentrate on the oesophageal cancer.

I am trying to ground myself and not over think or think too far ahead, trying to control simple things while I still can.

  • Dear Fran. I am so sorry to hear your story. You are right to reach out to this group as people will want to support you and help if they can. These are the dark days when you’ve been given a diagnosis but have no plan in place. Once you are given your treatment plan you will then be able to work towards that. If you haven’t already, it might be a good idea to explain to the medics your personal situation, as I found the more they knew about me the more personal they became. Do you have a nurse you can contact? I hope that you will be given a plan soon.  Take care and keep trying to ground yourself. Julie x

  • Hi Fran

Welcome to the Forum,  and thank you for sharing some of your current situation with us, this is a tough time indeed I feel, but to read that you are trying to keep yourself grounded, shows that you have the courage and strength to carry you through these coming months.

I am sorry to read of your double diagnosis, compounded by the dramatic loss of your relationship, and there are no words that can ease that experience for you, but I hope that the GI Team will be able to provide you with the best course of treatment that effectively target both the Breast and OC nodules.

Some of the current treatments for OC were initially created to target breast cancer, so hopefully this is something that they will have available for you.

The Macmillan team are also available and their number can be found in my signature, so if you need to chat, to rant or just to get things off your mind, reach out here, or to the Macmillan team, We are here for you.

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm having a EUS which I'm looking forward to like a hole in the head! But hopefully it will give the team s clearer picture!

  • Thanks for your thoughtful reply. The GI team want me to have a EUS. I had the endoscopy, when it was discovered I had oesophageal cancer with just a spray but I couldn't do that again for sure. The consultant is concerned by my high BMI and thinks ( I think) that I wouldn't be fit for surgery but I think this would give me the best chance of life.

  • It is different Fran, for everyone, some here have had surgery, some have had treatment some have had stents others not, some with great success.

My husband could not have surgery due to the location of the OC turmour, and palliative care was their best offer.. as it turns out, this wasn't as scary as they made it seem.. we were given max 1 year prognosis, even with treatment, less than half that without, but the treatment has been a Godsend and nearly 5 years on Dal is still with us, currently not on any treatment and just having regular scans. So no surgery, no diet change, just a really good reaction to chemo, immuno and radio therapy (not all at once :)

Honestly this disease has its own mind, there is no knowing, we can just hold on and put our-all into doing everything we can to help the medical profession help us.

It's tough, no doubt about that, it's the scary unknown, but in my eyes, for as long as possible, there is always hope,

Nothing is promised, not even negative outcomes, so if you can look towards your future and fingers crossed for the right treatment to come your way.

  • Hi Fran,

I’m really sorry to hear of your situation. It’s easy for me to say don’t worry or overthink, but having been in a situation similar to yours I know that’s easier said than done.
Every person is different and once your team have a defined treatment plan you will be able to make plans and prepare for what’s ahead.
I hope this process is straightforward for you.
    Good luck

  • Well that puts a different perspective, so thanks for sharing
